Kuchiki Byakuya. Head of one of the four noble houses of Soul Society. Captain of the sixth division. Composed, dignified* and powerful, Byakuya is one of the most intimidating figures in Kubo Tite's Bleach. Through most of the Soul Society storyline, he's portrayed as a cold, aloof aristocrat who cares more for the proprieties of Soul Society than the life of his adopted sister, Rukia. In fact, he plays the part of antagonist up to and even after Rukia's scheduled execution.
The only times we see a softer side of Byakuya involve his late wife, Hisana and their brief time together. Their relationship was built on promises. Promises made, broken and kept. Because in the end, all he had left of her were those promises. Even fifty years after her death, his (admittedly conflicted) devotion to Hisana is touching. We only get to see Hisana in his memory, but the tender moments Byakuya shared with his wife are sweet and beautifully sad, especially for such a serious and reserved man.
*Well, as dignified as you can get for someone wearing noodles on his head in public.

instrumental
For Byakua, quiet, composed and noodley classic.
One Hand, One Heart...West Side Story
Make of our hands one hand,
Make of our hearts one heart,
Make of our vows one last vow:
Only death will part us now.
The impending tragedy marriage song.
Changes Come...Over the Rhine
There is all this untouched beauty
The light, the dark both running through me
Is there still redemption for anyone?
This is a weird kind of "I want to be a good wife" type of song, with hopeful lyrics mixed with doubtful ones. It's almost too aggressive for Hisana, but oh, well. (There's also a bit about Jesus, but it took a long time for me to realize she's saying "Jesus." I thought it was something else.)
Angel...Sarah Mclachlan
Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For the break that will make it okay...
So tired of the straight line
That everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The first verse is for Hisana and her guilt over abandoning her sister. The second verse is for Byakuya and his failed attempt to adhere to his position and rules of Soul Society.
To Lay Me Down...Cowboy Junkies
To lie with you once more
To lie with you
With our dreams close together
To wake beside you
My love, still sleeping
To tell sweet lies, one last time
Then say goodnight
This one's got hope and loss.
Now Comes the Night...Rob Thomas
When the hour is upon us
And our beauty surely gone
No you will not be forgotten
And you will not be alone
No you will not be alone
This one's got doubts and reassurances.
All I Want is You...U2
You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want
Your story to remain untold
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
This one's about desires and promises. (Warning: This song has one of the longest outros ever.)
Magic...Ben Folds Five
You're the magic that holds the sky up from the ground
You're the breath that blows these cool winds 'round
Trading places with an angel now
Saw you last night
Dance by the light of the moon
A song about losing and letting go.
I Dug up a Diamond...Mark Knopfler
I dug up a diamond rare and fine
I dug up a diamond in a deep dark mine
If only I could cling to my beautiful find
I dug up a diamond in a deep dark mine...
Maybe once in a lifetime you hold one in your hand
Once in a lifetime in this land...
We aren't ever told how one of the noblest nobles that ever nobled got together with a woman from one of the worst districts in Rukongai. But we do know that Byakuya loved his wife.
Opus 36...Dustin O'Halloran
instrumental
And in the end it was simple, sweet and all too short.
