It's funny how all of the privileged rich closed-minded white kids flock to Queen's.
Let me say that in my Canadian lit class, I am the darkest person in the classroom. The next darkest is probably this really tall native-looking guy who has really great hair. We were reading a story by Dionne Brand called "At the Lisbon Plate", which is about a black girl's coming to terms with her ancestors' past as slaves to white people. There were people in the class arguing that the author/narrator is not justified in her anger and that this story should not have been published.
Liz and I were mortifid, as were some other students (one of whom was very vocal). She has a right to be angry. That is how she feel about racism and oppression against black people. You can tell that the people who say that her anger was not justified have never had to deal with racism. I wonder if they even had any black friends. It drove me crazy. Our ancestry is a part of us, it is relevant to history because history is made up of individual stories, some with a bigger impact than others, but this is that woman's story and she should be allowed to express how she feels. Her fucking race was enslaved, of course she is justified in her anger! Especially since racism STILL EXISTS. It's not all in the past! ;opawfh[wna
