The big issue of the Silence is we still don't know what their plan was. They have been doing some weird dodgy stuff we don't yet understand: 1. Puppeteering the human race for millenia 2. Killing Joy 3. Destroying Saturnyne (assuming Rosita wasn't lying) 4. Keeping a little girl in a space suit as an immune system (it is unclear if she recquired it or just gained a dependence) 5. Kidnapping Amy
The Silence who talks to Amy may have been a rogue, as it apparently kills without reason but seems to want to help Amy.
Whilst the captured Silence appears to believe that they are doing something wrong as he actually says "You should kill us all on sight", not "Leave us alone, we are not interested in Humanity".
One final point is the Doctor doesn't actually commit Genocide. A massacre, yes, but we know a) they exist on other worlds, like Saturnyne b) they are still managing to hang around Earth in the 21st Century.
The puppeteering seems to have been mutually beneficial so both them and us gained something from it
We don't know that. We are only told the Silence encouraged humans to go to the moon because they needed the technology (assuming the Doctor is even right about this). That's just one example. They could also have encouraged us to have lots of wars as wars produce new technology at an accelerated rate. The point is that humans were being controlled. If something has that kind of power over you it can use you however it likes.
Also what is scary looking is not an absolute truth. The Silence with their Munch's Scream-like face would strike most people as creepy. But the Silence have been manipulating humans for millennia, they could have just adjusted our collective consciousness to perceive these as non-threatening. After all humans can act against the Silence as long as they are looking at them.
I did wonder if they existed elsewhere, it seems logical they did. It also seems reasonable they could still exist that long (after all there's plenty of remote places and humans that don't have tv's) but the problem comes that any member of the Silence, even peaceful ones, now risk death from most humans.
Well the effect of "Neil Armstrong's foot" only seems to be short term, otherwise Amy, Rory and River would all have gone psycho earlier. So as long as they know to keep away from TV sets or check scheduling they could hang about pretty fine, or even just keep to the underground and in abandonded buildings as they were before.
I have been wondering if there are loads of Silence behind the Iron Curtain at this point. If we assume the whole space race was part of their plan then the would have been fine there for years as the footage would not have been broadcast IIRC.
I agree, that the Silence and Kovarian are working for different people, why else would they get Amy to tell him she was pregnant?
I like that, it makes a strange sort of sense. I agree the suit seems to have been created solely to keep the child safe and alive (which makes sense if they'd kidnapped her) but it also gives her communication and mobility (which doesn't make sense). After all, like you say, the Silence are everywhere and could have locked her up (and certainly should have the moment she started calling the president).
I hope we find out sme of the answers! I know some will obviously await next week, while others will be in the second half of the series (boo!).
The copy is there to fill Amy's place after she is kidnapped and to keep her consciousness engaged with the Doctor and Rory, not her real surroundings. There is no particular reason that finding out Amy is pregnant should alert the Doctor to anything. It is the fact that Amy is pregnant and the copy is not that causes the problem.
I don't think so. If the scanner definitively showed that Amy was pregnant, The Doctor would probably do more tests and more tests until one of those showed an abnormality in her molecular structure.
If the scanner showed definitively that she wasn't pregnant, I believe it was just a matter of time before he found out anyway. He worries enough about his companions anyways. Give him the barest whisper of a reason to worry more and he'll be on you like white on rice.
the Silence never seemed to be doing anything terribly evil
I thought exploding a random woman in the ladies' loo because she happened to be in the way was a pretty good indicator of the morality of the Silence.
And if they kept away from humans they'd be safe enough - it wasn't genocide, just a way to stop them controlling the human race.
True, but for the most part they seemed to be cowering in the dark.
Just because one Silence killed a person, doesn't mean that they all did. After all, humans kill but the vast majority oppose it so the same could be said of the Silence.
And at the same time if any went near humans, they'd be killed on sight regardless on if they were evil or not.
Just because one Silence killed a person, doesn't mean that they all did.
We don't know that they didn't either though.
They all manipulated humans -and human history - to get what they wanted though, and who knows how many people that killed, directly or indirectly?
Not to mention that they'd effectively enslaved the whole human race, even though the humans didn't know it.
And then there's that poor bloke who was in charge of the orphanage, who was "Silenced" so many times that he didn't even know what year it was.
I can't see that, at best, they're anything other than parasites, feeding off the humans and at worst they're murderous parasites.
Having said that, of course, the next episode will prove them to be benevolent misunderstood woobies, who only wanted to help, honest, because the Moff is just that evil :-)
This. So far I don't have any sympathy for the Silence. That won't change unless Moff somehow finds a convincing way to make them misunderstood or something.
Well I am also inclined to think that the Silence that was caught may have been rouge. Why else would he say Silence will fall. The demise of his own people. The Doctor that was killed was a flesh. He knew what was going to happen. and Yes I think he did set up the whole thing. I also think that when Amy was taken and that recording thing was found. it may have been the real Amy's thoughts that was being transmitted.
The Silence must have something to do with the flesh. They said she does them honor when she was captured. Why?
I imagine the silence needed the space trip to induce mass global inducing since just about everyone was watching it on TV. But why is the question indeed. That's what I think so far. Just trying to pinpoint when Amy was taken.
I always thought Amy was captured before Day of the Moon. That's when she first saw Kovarian.. real Amy was in between conscious and reality, thus why she saw her. I think the Doctor suspected it during DOTM.
