I find that the birds are helping me fight off the winter doldrums this year. Over the summer I bought a bird bath and a tray feeder to go along with my regular feeder and suet feeder. Our beautiful maple tree out front dropped all of its leaves and it's so nice to be able to see what's happening on all of the branches. I saw a downy woodpecker and a flicker among our usual chickadees, cardinals, and titmice. A flock of cedar waxwings even came through. That was a first for me. My tomato cages are close to our birdfeeder, so the birds hang out on them and grab some bugs off the plants while they wait their turn. Now a black-capped chickadee is going up and down the stems eating bugs. Helpful little creatures.
