I got the strangest call today from a guy I used to do mornings with. His brother was in sales here for a while and is still in sales locally, just not in broadcasting. I've seen him a couple of times recently, I guess.
Anyway, this guy calls and says his brother saw me and said I'd lost all that weight I had put on, that I looked great, but that my boobs were bigger than ever.
The truth is, he's right. When I lost weight this time, it didn't come off there and I am not happy about it. My collarbone can't sustain the weight, hence painkillers on a daily basis. It's ridiculous. It's the biggest reason I lost the weight to begin with.
But why on earth would a guy say something like that to me? It was one of the weirdest conversations I think I've ever had, and I've had some doozies.
This week a family called me, grieving over the untimely loss of their 24 year old son/brother/uncle, who loved my show, the whole family does. (Okay, I'm being buttered up for something, what could it be this time?)
They want me to call Doreena Javins and ask her for money to bury their loved one. And they're asking me because they know he loved my show and he worked so hard to get where he was and now they can't even afford an autopsy, let alone a burial.
????????????????????????????????????????
Is it just me, or is that over the top? Just in case anyone IS reading this, Doreena's son Scott disappeared two years ago and hasn't been seen since. The hell this lady must go through on a daily basis just cripples me thinking about it. And they want me to make her phone ring so I can ask if she can use some of the reward money for their needs?
Again, an aside: the reward fund is pretty huge, and apparently the family recently announced that they were making the funds available for certain other purposes. I was out of town and had no idea about that.
So I couldn't make the call. I called the family back, (they'd called me three times from the start to the end of my shift...did they really think I could do this during my show? I know they were grieving and desperate, but still...I told them I couldn't reach the Javins' and they told me they'd already talked to them and they were seeing if they could help.
They were very grateful that I listened to them and called them back, but what I'm wondering now is....isn't that a completely innappropriate thing for them to have done? Or am I not getting it?
