A True Hurricane Story

Back in 1989, I lived in Charlotte, NC when Hurricane Hugo hit. We were on the east side of the storm and basically got the worst of it. There was no power for about two weeks, so there was a lot of living on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, canned tuna, and similar "cuisine". Also, everyone sharing tips on which gas stations and convenience stores had managed to get supplies like gas or ice. And people selling $1,000 chain saws.

We found out that a lot of our neighbors, this being the south, had actually taken preparedness seriously and had stocked up on canned goods and what not. But we also found out that a lot of our neighbors' planning skills needed some work: it turned out they only had ELECTRIC can openers. I think at one point about half a dozen families were using our can opener.
