Picspam: Celebrating 26 years of reunification - I had fun yesterday

Oct 02, 2016 23:44

Since I will be almost 60 when the official celebration of the reunification will be back in Dresden in 16 years, I want to see and do as much as possible.

Even though the official holiday is on Monday it already started yesterday, it's going on for the whole weekend. I want to show some pictures of the fun I had. First I went to a fashion show with GDR fashion design and props, it was great fun. Then I visited the huts of all the other German countries, where you can eat and drink special things from there, saw the Bremen town musicants and a Wartburg model, and finally I watched the police orchestra playing Dixieland and a marching band. Click the LJ cut for all the pictures!

Let's begin with the fashion show. It was really well and funny done. Apparently with the first picture I cut off the little girl with the doll carriage. I had (and still have) the exact same, just in orange. The two on the right wear dederon aprons, which were made from a synthetic fiber material. It didn't crinkle and protected the clothes when doing housework:

The next entry was about leisure / downtime, there was a girl with skis, the other girl had a Diamant bicycle and I especially enjoyed the young man in speedos ;) He was lucky that it was a warm day.

And there's also a girl in track suit carrying a so called heavy "medicine ball". They were used in PE in school and the moderator asked the girl, she said they still use them.

This next bicycle can be folded to save space, so it can be stored away. Many of the clothes shown were actually not bought off the rack but handsewn, if you were lucky you got a fashion journal from Western Germany.

Now we come to the uniforms, the white pioneer blouse (which used to be worn inside the pants though, not over them!) and the blue Free German Youth for the older kids.

And these girls are very fashionable in black leather, very Eighties ;)
The others are dressed for the youth ceremony, the Socialist version of communion, where at the age of 14 you start to be treated as an adult, and get lots of gifts.

Now we come to the country huts, these Steiff teddys are at home in Baden-Württemberg of course!

And Thuringia did not only bring its famous Bratwurst along, but also a model of the Wartburg. It's where Luther translated the Bible:

And these guys are visiting from Bremen:

This is the police orchestra, playing Dixieland melodies. Each May we have a huge Dixieland festival in Dresden, with several stages throughout the city and there are always lots of people bopping along, but here I was almost alone.

Then I just walked along the street, minding my own business, when I saw a man and a woman in white pants and red shirts, and deducted that they soon may play in a marching band. It was the Spielmannszug Zabeltitz. Before that I also had seen people playing alphorns but because I was eating a fish sandwich from the Bremerhaven hut at the time I wasn't quick enough to photograph them so no picture sadly. If anything, these days show how rich and diverse on gourmet and cultural stuff Germany is!

I made a little video of the band while marching along. I love marching bands. Especially the big drum and the cymbals. They were very loud!
