What is wrong with this country?
We have so much momentum right now. I wish there was something we could do. But we didn't even win the popular vote, and so the extent of the unfairness of Bush's victory this time around lies only in the fucked up electoral system and the deliberate disenfranchisement of minority voters. It's practically democracy, and we can't fight against democracy. The majority of the people chose Bush, out of ignorance or fear or true belief in his values. We need to fight against fear and ignorance.
We need to fight against the unforgivable bias and deliberate fearmongering of the media. We need to take back journalism from the hands of wealthy individuals and corporations. If the American people knew the truth about what's been happening in Iraq, they would never have voted for Bush. We are not a cruel people; we don't believe that war is good and we don't revel in high death tolls. But we're afraid for ourselves, because Bush tells us to be afraid, Cheney tells us to be afraid, FOX News tells us to be afraid.
We don't hold discrimination as one of our core founding values, but we voted to ban same-sex marriage in 11 states at an average of 63% approval. To me that is shocking. And it is only because of the fear instilled in us that marriage will be undermined and our continuing belief that homosexuality is somehow wrong or less worthy of recognition. If we were less afraid, if we were able to think clearly and levelheadedly, free from the constant pressure of the media and right-wing leaders to give in to fear, I don't think those constitutional amendments would have passed by such a landslide.
We mean well. But we do not have the means to choose well. That is the wrong we need to right, because the results of this election were more legitimate than last time, because turnouts were record-breaking and we can't fight what the people have chosen. We have to address what the people know and let them choose, next time, without misinformation or fear.
