So I went to see Thor 2 in VOSTFR 3D.
In a non-spoilery way here's what I thought: It was great! The images are really pretty and well worth the big screen (but maybe not the 3D).
Also, I think "Le Soldat d'Hiver" sounds better and is a better French translation of "Winter Soldier" than "Le Soldat de l'Hiver". Maybe that's just me though, because they're using "Le Soldat de l'Hiver" as the French title of Captain America 2. The trailer we got was slightly different than
this one, in that Black Widow's "Too shy or too scared?" line was shortened to "Too shy?".
Props to the subtitles team, they had a few goofs, but that was okay because they had correct use of tu/vous through-out the movie (and the trailer). FUCKING FINALLY. Ill-use of tu/vous is one of the reasons I watch things in vostfr instead of vf. It's less jarring to read than hear. And okay, I'll be the first to admit that the tu/vous distinction is a very cultural and/or personal and/or context-specific thing and that it's definitely hard to pin-point the point where tu shifts into vous and vice versa, but come on, those guys are paid proffessionals, they shouldn't have people say 'tu' to their commanding officers! (Looking at you, Stargate SG1 dub, looking at you and judging.) /end rant
It was great! It was funny, beautifully shot and I loved the characters.
I loved how Darcy took charge on Earth while Jane was in Asgard and her interrupting Jane's romantic moments. I wasn't a fan of her romance because it felt really shoe-horned in at the end and I had been enjoying those two characters as friends beforehand.
I wasn't a fan of the way Erik was treated, especially the lol pants moments, but I did like seeing him again. And these lines were gold: "I've had a god in my head. I wouldn't reccomend it." and "Thank God! I mean, I'm sorry for your loss." (this mostly due to delivery).
I loved the Escape from Asgard bit! Very heist-y, very caper-y and Loki trolling Thor was awesome. I really liked Chris Evans' performance, because his body language was so loki, I wasn't actually sure it was him. (I'm bad at faces.) Also, Thor's plan: surprisingly subtle!
Thor and Loki bickered like siblings believably, especially when they're in the ship, so that was good.
Actually, Loki was very entetaining to watch in this movie. Less the "Kneel puny mortals" guy from Avengers, and more the Trickster-esque figure from mythology/early in the first movie. I much prefer this characterisation.
Asgard was beyond gorgeous, especially in the funral scene.
One thing I really really loved: the way Loki's fighting style mirrors Frigga's. That was great. (Seriously, look at her fight against Malekith, especially the way she holds her sword, and Loki's fight scene in Svartalfheim, he holds his knife the same way and his moves are similar. Plus, her magic is the same colour as his, so clearly, he was her favourite.)
I would have loved more Hogun, but all of the Warriors Three were shortchanged, I felt. Sif as well. I did like that we saw a glimpse of Volstagg's family.
Speaking of family, A++ casting of Bor, he looks so exactly like in the comics that I knew who he was the moment I saw him.
Heimdall was also great. I really want a Heimdall mini-film, especially given the last scene. Surely Heimdall knows?
I loved Jane and Darcy saving the day with SCIENCE! I guess Erik, Ian and Thor helped.
The little call-backs/Chekov's Guns were nice. The car keys!
As fr the final battle, I mostly liked the little asides: Thor on the subway! ("How do i get to Greenwich?" "Take this line, get off in three stations.") and Mjolnir's exasperated back and forth between realm. That hammer has real pesonality! I laughed when it crashed through the fence, very "fuck this, you better pick one realm and STICK WITH IT".
I loved Thor protecting Darcy when Jane blew up the first time. He cares! And Thor hanging his hammer on the coat rack at Jane's place.
Things I did not expect to ship as hard as I did: Algrim/Malekith, Jane/Sif, Jane/Loki, Jane/Malekith and Frigga/Odin.
The credits were gorgeous! I only saw one of the post-credit scenes, because I thought there was only one. I was tempted to stay but it was already past midnight, so I left.
In other news, I've joined
wrisomifu and have written 2K+ (including this post and some computer code) today and 1957 words of story + notes. I'm quite happy with myself!
