Summary: Changmin remembers a voice from his childhood...
Sometimes, Changmin remembered, he would climb the tree in his tiny backyard, other times he would just rest under it and dream the hot summer days away. The tree wasn’t really interesting, nor was it actually fun to be around. It hardly blocked any light and the cicadas buzzed annoyingly everyday. There was only one plus to hanging around the lone oak, the mysterious voice that came by every weekday around five in the evening from the other side of the fence.
“Twinkle, twinkle, little star…”
The first time he had heard the voice, he giggled at the slurred words and the off pitches, believing his mother sang infinitely better. However, as the summer wore on and the singer grew more confident with their skill, the tune erupted into a loveable song between strong hums and correct notes. The voice mesmerized him. While it was still off because it was just a child singing, Changmin felt like the stranger had given him an unforgettable gift.
“How I wonder what you are -”
When summer ended, the voice never came back, not even the next year.
“Up above the world so high… Like a diamond in the sky… Twinkle, twinkle, little star… How I wonder what you are -”
“You’re always singing that song, Jae,” Changmin whispered to his lover’s ear. Jaejoong turned over to face Changmin in bed, blowing the hair out of his eyes to stare clearly into the others. The cool autumn air nipped at his cheeks; Changmin rubbed his thumb gently over the reddening flesh as he continued to hum the song, fingers now tapping a pattern into his back.
“It was the only song I could play on the piano for the longest time when I was growing up. Because of that, I didn’t sing anything else until my fingers could dance to another melody.” Then he proceeded to softly sing the words into his lovers ears, lulling him back to sleep.
