On a culinary note...
Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake) is a one-crust pie made of steamed onions, diced bacon, sour cream, and caraway seeds on a yeast dough -- or a leavened dough which is particularly popular in the German winegrowing regions of the Southwest, incl. Rhenish Hesse, the Palatinate, Franconia, and Swabia. A similar pie called "Flammkuchen" is eaten in the Alsace (France) and a quiche variant exists in Switzerland's Basel area.
