Percy was just working on the framework for Rina's house (he means to start Lady Tamarind's right after) and took a pause for lunch. He was sitting against the foundation, cross-legged, with his eyes closed so that he could enjoy the sun. The sunlight is getting so brief lately, and the weather's so messy and wet, that it's nice to have a bit of warmth to pause in.

Which was all very well, except that now, sitting on his lap, is a long slender white body. Her head is resting against his shoulder; her long spiralled horn, rather like a gold shell, is touching his cheek. Her tail is long and slightly furry, like a mouse's, except for the puff of long silky fur at the end. She's quite small, maybe because she's a baby, or maybe because that's just what they look like, unicorns. Percy's never seen one before.

She's sleeping, and he doesn't want to shift her or call for help, since that might wake her up, so right now he's helpless. People used to say that unicorns always came to lay their heads in the laps of virgins, but he certainly never assumed that he qualified.
