Miz Deliverance writes her name in a spidery scrawl under the "cook" heading. It would be difficult to find someone more capable in the kitchen.

"Ma'am," he nods.

She smiles. "Hello. I imagine I'll have to keep a scarcer kitchen than I'm used to, but it can be done."

"I appreciate the help. Let the hunters worry about stocking the pantry."

"I'm a grandmother," she says. "What am I here for, if not to feed people?"

A little, spiky sort of smile.

She smiles back, gentle, matronly -- but just a little sharper, in her way. "What sort of numbers are we looking at? How many mouths to feed?"

"Not entirely sure yet. Only the ones that choose to help, unless circumstances are extreme. A few dozen? I'll let you know."

"All right," says Deliverance, looking thoughtful. "I suppose I'll take a look at what's left in the kitchen."

He nods. "Ideally, we should ration what's there, but I don't know that I have the men to enforce that yet."

"Don't worry. There won't be anyone in my kitchen I don't let in," she says, utterly serene.
