He had been going to a wedding, and so his clothes are of an even finer cut than is usual for the governor of Messina. Leonato is all but bubbling with the joy of his daughter's impending marriage, the coming fruition of his harmless schemes, the pleasure of seeing his shrewish niece at last brought to civility by love--and although he is an older man, there is a sprightly bounce to his step.
He is, in short, a man nearly at the conclusion of a comedy, and he has no idea that he is walking into a farce.
The first hint, perhaps, is that his daughter no longer stands beside him; the second is that he is clearly no longer within his own home.
Typist: Long-promised, late-delivered--Signior Leonato, father to Hero and romantic coconspirator of Much Ado About Nothing.
