As much as I mock and scoff at religious zealots, there are a great many things I like about religion itself. I was trying to explain this to my mother when one way or another we came upon the subject of the Virgin Mary.

Fae: The woman was brilliant.
Mom: *chuckles* And how is that?
Fae: Just think about it! During that age, unwed women carrying a child with no father to name brought only shame to their families. As a result, inexplicable pregnancies were often blamed on demons. But what did Mary do? She wasn't seduced by some mere incubus*. Oh no! This was God's child! Man, to have the audacity to make such a claim and become a revered religious icon... she must have been pretty damn convincing.
Mom: *rubs temple* Perhaps it was an incubus and not your father after all.

Religion! Teaching each generation how to lie really, really well by refuting logic.

Okay, so Mother didn't really say the last part, but she was probably thinking it. And I do like some aspects of religion. The stories! The art! The history! The crazies!

* Actually, incubi are usually associated with rape. Whether it was some unknown monster that had invaded their bed or a person (*cough*clergy*cough*) who could not afford to be named in a scandal, it was an incubus.
