Well! Yesterday my office burned down. From what I understand, some idiot from the company downstairs flicked a lit cigarette into an outdoor trashcan. About a quarter after four, the fire alarm went off and everyone shuffled out of the office. Once outside, we could all see the smoke billowing out and flames licking up the side of the building. Those who were by that end had to choose another escape route to avoid the smoke. Once the fire trucks started pulling in and laying out hoses, we knew we had to move fast if we wanted to get out of there soon. Mother and I left at 4:30pm.

After several phone calls, we started getting reports of the damage. The roof had collapsed in some rooms and others were hacked through with holes for smoke ventilation. Every surface was covered in soot and the sprinkler system destroyed much of the paperwork and our computer systems. They allowed a couple people inside (with escorts) to salvage what they could, but there wasn't much. Patti described it as a war zone inside, saying that after seeing her office she couldn't bear to look at the others. It really sucks and all, but obviously Patti has never experienced disaster before. With her weak constitution, she had no right being in there.

We have an emergency office in another town, but it's not set up yet. It's a small space that could fit about six people, so not everyone will be going back to work. Luckily enough, Mother and I both made the cut. I have no idea why they'd keep a receptionist, but apparently they really like me and plan to extend my training to cover more. though they've given me a week off since there's not much I can do at the moment.

The people who own the building told our president that they're planning to fix it up in five weeks and that they'll give us some office space rent-free in the meantime. Bullshit. They'll have to tear it down first before rebuilding anything. I'm pretty sure they're just telling Jim that so we'd stay. They'd set us up in their free space, give us the promised five weeks, then make us pay for the remainder of our stay until our building is finished. They wouldn't charge us the same amount we'd been paying originally, but they'd charge us all the same. Jim might as well find us somewhere else to settle permanently while we stay at the emergency office the we set up.
