There's a certain irony in music being my passion and wanting to make music. I suspect something's . . . I wouldn't say wrong . . . More like . . . odd about my hearing ( Read more... )

Wow, this was such a delightfully long post, and not just on trivial little matters either - it's so refreshing to read into other people's life (please don't misinterpret that as a creeper statement) compared to what I've been doing this entire school year - read research articles or textbooks that are more useful as firewood.

First off, I can completely understand what you say about countermelodies. Having being classically trained for nine years, and switching instruments my last year, I have really learned to appreciate everything. When I listen to music, I sometimes will strain to hear a particular weaving line while keeping the rest of what is going on in the background. Fun stuff, that is. And the beauty of it is that it definitely does not need to be classical either. :D

On a more important note, I think that you should go, without a doubt, check out that ear. I understand that adulthood is suddenly so much more burdensome when it comes to having to be responsible for a bunch of new things, but in a situation like this, you are the priority. I think from how doctors generally work in my experience, they can't help you if your condition isn't acting up on you at the time you are talking to them, but obviously they can't expect you to just drive there while you are having your aches. So I think the next best thing to do is to just talk to them about what you did to check that you had suspicions about your left ear, the putting your finger into it, and the extreme pupil dilation. Tell the doctor that you shone a light into your eye and it didn't affect the pupil whatsoever. But please, please go get it checked out asap.

I hope everything turns out fine for you, and update us on what ends up happening eventually! If you are comfortable with it, that is. Good luck!

Hello, it's been a while (and alas, it may continue to be)! Sorry I haven't been active on LJ in the past months; been dealing with the matter of figuring myself out lol. I'm glad my post had a positive impact on someone else and, no, I don't find your comment creeper-ly at all. :p Your situation reminds me of a similar one I faced as a college student, reading dry articles for a research paper until my research led me to an online Victorian journal/diary of this man who was a sex addict-fascinating, as you can imagine.

I love how people can surprise you. I wouldn't have guessed you have a musical background. That just cements our friendship. :D I also wouldn't have guessed that what comes naturally to me is apparently a skill people train themselves to learn. :O I'm relieved my discussion on countermelodies makes sense to another person. I would not have been surprised to get a "That's so weird" lol.

I'm impressed you got the gist of my situation and my concern about how to respond to it. I indeed am wary of the event where I know the condition isn't acting up when I go and thus won't be detected. Lately I've been trying to trace what causes the aches, and I think I may be on to something, so maybe I won't be met with a "You're fine" when I do get checked out. I appreciate the advice and the concern btw, thanks! I'll keep it in mind.

The other key thing I neglected to mention in my post is the ringing in my ears that accompanies the aches. It comes and goes, though I now wonder if it actually does go, or whether background noises (like the deafening humming of ventilation noises) simply mask it. That's the thing about being out in the world: there's never a moment where a person can get complete silence, and that's the moment when I do notice the ringing strongly, such as in my room.

Work's keeping me from doing anything for myself lately, but I have a week off or so coming up at the end of the month, when I plan to do something about this. Will def' keep you posted!
