Unless there's a good plot reason, probably not, especially if there's stiff in-game penalties for the characters that die.

Fourth walling Derek's canon is pretty obscure, but sure, go for it. Bonus points if you want to forth wall him as Bon Jovi (yes, he does know who that is).
