Honestly, since his canon is by no means pan-versal, I wouldn't know, but animals don't seem to get infected in canon (actually, once you're a vampire or about to go over, animals tend to run for it or attack if cornered), I'd guess the infection is likely human-specific (although Derek would be paranoid about anyone or anything getting hold of his blood just on general principles).

And heh, yeah, I like that idea, actually. I'm sure there'll be many points where Derek won't be as of control of himself as usual, and the scare would be good for them both for plot stuffs :D
