Blast Hole Through Monitor With Sawed-Off Shotgun To Continue

Okay, so this week I thought I'd give this whole "vidding" thing a try.
I downloaded a couple episodes that I knew I wanted clips from and checked them to make sure they played through okay. Not a problem.

Then I tried to import them into my Windows Movie Maker.

Not so much of a sucess. I keep getting this message that apparantly my computer doesn't have the codec necessary to play the files.

Now, bear in mind that I know next to nothing about computers, but I know enough to know that codecs have something to do with how videos are played.
But if I can play the files in both Windows Media Player and my DivX Player, clearly my computer can play the files somehow just fine. So why is Movie Maker having an issue?

So I go and spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out what the problem is. Because, see, I have a couple music videos sitting on my harddrive, and as an experiment I discovered that I can import some of those into Movie Maker just fine.
So, is it the format? No, it has no problem with .avi files. Does it matter whether the files are "protected" or not? Nope, not that either. Is it the file size? Thought so for awhile, but now I don't think that's it either.

And as far as I can tell, the whole "codecs" thing is a load of crap. Because not only do the files play in Media Player just fine, but I even checked to see if there are any updates I need to get for my Player, and apparantly I'm up to date.
Of course, I can't figure out how to check the same for my Movie Maker, but I would think I'd be getting some sort of "update available" message if that was the case, because that's typically what happens. Right?

In conclusion, I can't figure out what the hell is going on here that I can import some files and not some others, and that all of my downloaded episodes would (of course) happen to fall into the latter category.

Can anybody who actually knows something about Windows Movie Maker help me figure this out here? Please don't tell me I spent three days downloading eight episodes including (gag) "The Woman King" just for nothing.
