That went well

Yeah, okay, so I haven't updated in a while (or, you know, at all) and I don't really have a fantastic excuse for that.  Truth is, I kind of have conflicted feelings about fandom and the platforms through which we've been experiencing it lately.  I wouldn't say these feelings are solely responsible for precluding me from getting involved in fandom but they've definitely made it a whole lot more confusing.

On the one hand you've got Tumblr (which I use solely for following other people), which is fantastic because it's pretty awesome for spreading shiny things like gifs and memes and picspams.  On the other, you have LiveJournal, whose format perfectly facilitates the sort of in-depth discussion and conversation that I love about fandom.

Granted, they're not mutually exclusive and just because they're ill-equipped for certain purposes doesn't mean they fail at them entirely but as somebody who's been aware of fan-culture for something like 7 years now (oh my god, that thought terrifies me), it's just interesting to observe the sort of trends that are emerging now.  People have definitely left LJ and flocked to Tumblr and while plenty of people have accounts with both, I'm the sort of person who balks at having to juggle the logistics of it all.  My head would explode.

I've been wondering if it's even worth having an LJ anymore since all the activity's been moving to alternate places like dreamwidth and Tumblr but since it's the format I'm most comfortable with, I'm staying put.
