are we going to seed the participants, or is it going to be set up at random? 'cause that's how you could resolve the topic selection thing (higher seed picks the side). or you could do it at random.
As for the topics, you could recycle some of the ones that turned out to be good debates, I suppose.
I've got a methodology in my head for generating the schedule. I'm basically going to put everyone in groups of four (only for scheduling purposes), who I've observed arguing somewhat along the same idealogical lines. Then each person will debate the 12 people outside their group. Seeding would be difficult because it would give certain people an unfair advantage, and I can't think of anything to base the seedings on.
I'd rather see the latter solution, done in the following fashion:
The moderator privately asks both participants to choose their preferred side. If they choose compatibly, fine. If not then one or the other is selected (don't care how). In ALL cases, the moderator reports the results in the debate header.
Fairness is important, but moreso is the ability for the readers to discern what's going on, IMO.
