[Public] Boo

Some of you may know that, back in May, I went to Germany with my fiance. While there, we both used our GPS devices to track where we were walking. In case you don't know, Google Earth lets you upload the .gpx files stored by GPS devices when you ask them to track where you are going. After they are uploaded, you can view the path you took on the world!

I had to go through a bit of trouble to get this to work with my GPS - the model I have does not have tracking capabilities built in, so I had to download a program and install it on the GPS in order to enable tracking. And although it is configurable, so I can change how often it takes data points, my GPS doesn't have a lot of extra storage space for the large files that can be generated by taking points very frequently.

While in Germany, both of us used our GPS devices throughout the trip (neither of us has a large enough battery to last an entire day, although his has far more memory than mine does). Due to the memory limitations, I pulled the .gpx files off my device each night and saved them to a folder on my desktop. Then I would permanently delete the file from the GPS.

Some of you may -also- know that I have been jogging for a while, and have recently had a death wish started running outside here in Baltimore. I've been saving the GPS tracks for these jogs as well, and uploading them to a site called SportyPal (a neat site if you do outdoor exercising and have a GPS). Again, after each jog I save the file from the GPS into that same folder (since it's all .gpx files, after all!) to prepare for upload, and then ctrl-delete to permanently delete the file from the GPS.

Well, last night, when I ctrl-deleted ... I still had the folder selected. The entire folder, ALL of those .gpx files I'd saved from Germany. Gone. :( :( :( :( This is the second unintentional deletion I've done in not very many days. Sad panda.

sad, stupidity, running, exercise, travel
