Amanda and I were talking about whom our favorite FFXII character was. I really liked the honorable, stoic Basch. He is the loyal retainer, he doesn't sit around pondering the morality of what he does, he just does what his sense of duty demands. Amanda prefers the lovable sky pirate Balthier, the rogue with darker issues in his past. You would assume that as "The Professional Rogue" that I would lean toward preferring the rogue of the party.
There are two types of rogues, exemplified to some degree by the Star Wars trilogy. You have two basic roguetypes, the "smugglers" and the "bounty hunters." Because of Han Solo, smugglers are seen as the lovable rogue archetype. He begins the series as a selfish person who cares only about his own skin, but before long his heroic tendencies come to the front. The bounty hunters get less press, because in the movies they are seen on the side of the villains. We meet the bounty hunters in the second money, with Darth Vader hiring a number of them to hunt down the party of heroes. The bounty hunter isn't evil, he'd easily work for the Rebel Alliance if the price was right. He agrees to do a task for a sum, and them carries out that task in the most Professional manner possible. The smuggler would pick up a load of cargo, in the hopes of making profit once he has gotten his illegal goods to where the demand is.
I'm not really saying that Basch is a rogue, though. He is definitely more in the classical knight or samurai model. But he still more fits my idea of Yojimbo, whom is the "hired bodyguard" after all. I think the key is that they operate from a certain code of conduct, a standard that they hold themselves too. It could be similar to bushido or the code of chivalry.
One reason I would never just walk out of a job, that it is nigh unfathomable, is that I know my duty as a father is to provide for my family. Whatever slings and arrows I may suffer is irrelevant. Much like Jay, I don't feel any particular loyalty to my employer, I would leave for a better opportunity should it present itself. But I will never leave this job voluntarily unless I feel it is the best decision for my family. My Duty as Husband and Father is clear to me. I am the protector and the provider.
Man, I'm so white and nerdy.
My favorite newish band, TV ON THE RADIO, is playing in Atlanta and Nashville in April. I ought to go. Their new album, Return to Cookie Mountain, is probably my favorite album of last year, even over the new TOOL. I'd like to check out their older albums as well.
I was a Rogue.
