One of my Mom's co-workers had a birthday yesteday, and she wanted 50 hugs for her 50th birthday. We went, in spite of the high level of anxiety I had about going into that town. Let's just say I had some white wine while I was there, ha ha. But it was pretty nice - the wine helped me be a bit more open, and I was able to relax marginally. I chilled with the dog a lot, and Mom's other co-worker Sheila. We talked about Harry Potter, Twilight and about how nothing ever pleases Bella.
Then I played "Boo" with a kid named Sarah and, of course, we instantly became best friends. It turns out she likes Barney like I did when I was a kid!! I know that shouldn't surprise me or make me happy - it's a really popular show - but we TOTALLY sang the Barney song together, and it was great. She likes Dora, too. She didn't like me saying "O noes" and poking her nose, though. We got a picture taken together, and it was really cute when I sat on the ground and she decided to sit in my lap (I guess it's more comfy than standing?) This is the first time in a while that I've connected with a little kid - I used to be a lot more social, so it would happen all the time, but the last time was last semester in Parenting class with Kyara (who I had to share with all the other girls and guys, too, so it doesn't count as much). Sarah wanted me to open the door for her every time she went through (but when other people tried to, she'd be like: "No, Amanda"), so I made up a chant to the Magical White Shingled Door (yes, I know, unoriginal name) and said the chant to make it open. I threw in a few grunts and tried to make it look difficult, just for good measure.
I used to get kids saying all the time that they liked me because I was "one of them", but it's been so long since I've been around kids in a spontaneous setting... I mean, my little cousin Ella who's just met me is one thing, but a random kid is another. I dunno, it was nice to feel wanted, I guess.
Talk to you all later :o)
