Summary: The first meeting was random, and didn't last long. When the visitor keeps appearing, needless to say Sora gets interested, and might get more than what he's bargaining for.
It had to have been when he was 13. He remembered the day clearly, for it was the strangest day he had ever had in his life before getting thrown head-first into the role of Keybearer. It was a calm afternoon, late spring if he remembered correctly. The sun beat down upon the beach warmly, and a refreshingly cool breeze from the ocean would kick up every now and then. Sora walked along in the shallow water, waves lapping playfully at sand and feet. His shoes were off to enjoy the sensation more, not minding that he had to carry them in his hands.
That was when the brunet saw him. He looked like he was 15 or something, standing on the beach with his hands in his pockets. The teen dressed simply, yet classily, in a button-up shirt and dark purple pants. His short, slightly wavy, ash-blond hair danced a little in the breeze, lilac eyes trained on the horizon with what looked like a cross between a smile and a smirk on his lips. He looked a little feminine, but there was something about him that told him the teen was most certainly male. The boy's face had a pixie look to it, and Sora had the feeling that this guy could dish out the mischief like nobody's business. His curiosity piqued, he decided to get closer to talk to him.
"Hey! Don't think I've seen you around before. Did you just move here or something?" Sora asked, all cheer and friendliness. He grinned at the teen, and almost faltered when those lilac eyes locked onto his ocean blue. Behind them, he had the feeling that there was something about this kid that made him think that he was not only older than what he appeared, but had a mysterious aura around him. The "teen" smirked, looking amused at what appeared to be a private joke that Sora just couldn't figure out.
"Nah, I'm just visiting," he replied smoothly, calmly, as if this was normal for him. Well, as far as Sora knew, it was normal for this guy. The teenager continued. "I'm amazed at how lovely this beach is. It's been quite a while since I've seen something this pristine."
That struck the brunet as odd. There weren't any major cities on Destiny Islands, that he knew for sure, and thus there wasn't too much of a problem with pollution, since everyone would either walk or take a boat to get to where they needed to go. Sora and his two best friends had always talked about there being different worlds out there, so…was it possible that this guy was from another world? Just like Kairi? But it sounded like he could travel at will. It gave him hope that they would be able to really go to different worlds, to perhaps find Kairi's own world! Though he wanted to know more, he couldn't help focusing on the compliment paid to his island.
"It's not that special, is it?" the brunet questioned curiously. The other boy just seemed amused by the question, like there was a hidden punchline that Sora was unaware of.
"Only in the eyes of the beholder. After all, if you've lived here all your life, then what, indeed, is so special about a place like this? As a visitor, you can appreciate it more, and some will wonder why the people who live here take such beauty for granted," he said, though the explanation went a little over Sora's head. Still, the brunet could understand what the true meaning behind those words were. It was also his chance to ask about the other worlds, and he took it with the fervor and passion of the curious and adventurous.
"So, you are from another world, right?" And the boy…giggled. It struck the islander as emotionless, fake, and had the soft note of condescension in it. Sora wondered, absently, what on earth would have happened in someone's life to make even the act of laughter something so fake, when it should be pure and honest? He wanted to know more about him, to hear his story, though he had the feeling that it would be difficult to get that out of him.
"Perhaps," he shrugged, "My time here is limited, however. Staying away from home for too long is bad for my health."
Sora just looked at him in confusion, which only served to amuse the ash-blond male further. He giggled again.
"I'm Joshua. I wonder if we'll meet again?" Joshua turned around, his back to the sea and Sora, and he could instinctively tell that the teen was still smirking, "Who knows what the future brings, after all."
"Ah, wait!" the brunet shouted when he saw the other walk away. Joshua paused, turning his head back slightly. Sora fumbled for a brief moment. "I'm…I'm Sora! If you come back, then will you tell me about your world?"
He hmph'd, shrugged, and then resumed walking casually away. "Maybe, maybe not. Only time will tell."
~*~*~*
The next meeting he had with Joshua had to have been a couple months before his 14th birthday. Riku and Kairi were working on a project together, and had to leave the smaller island early as a result. Sora had stayed behind to play with Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie for a little while. The sun was starting its descent beneath the calm horizon, waves lazily lapping at the shore. It was on the dock, looking for all the world like he was perfectly at home there, that the brunet saw the familiar figure of Joshua. His form was washed in gold-orange light and shadows, oddly making him look like the embodiment of twilight.
"Seems like we keep meeting here, doesn't it?" Joshua commented, making Sora jump when he got closer. The ash-blond teen hadn't moved at all, continuing to watch the sunset like it was the most interesting thing in the world. He hesitated at the stairs leading up to the dock, unsure of whether sitting next to him would be too personal or something. Joshua's giggle was a sound that had hollow familiarity to it. "Tell me, Sora, are you more comfortable sitting or standing? I think it'd be awkward talking to someone standing right behind me, wouldn't you agree?"
