Then End of Awards Season is Nigh...

Jan 14, 2016 08:02

Thank goodness!

The Oscar nominations are in. My happiness over the nominations for Tom Hardy, Alicia Vikander and Saoirse Ronan are dampened by hearing of the passing of Alan Rickman so I'm going to roll in my disgust over Jennifer Lawrence's nomination for the terrible "Joy" to take my mind away from the death of Hans Gruber.

Spotlight

Leading actor
Eddie Redmayne - The Danish Girl
Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant
Matt Damon - The Martian
Bryan Cranston - Trumbo
Michael Fassbender - Steve Jobs (Fassbender shows you don’t have to shill in order to get a nomination. After “Shame” he said he was done playing the award game and it’s true: he didn’t campaign for this or “12 Years a Slave” and still got nominations.)

Leading actress
Brie Larson - Room
Saoirse Ronan - Brooklyn
Cate Blanchett - Carol
Alicia Vikander - The Danish Girl
Maggie Smith - Lady In The Van (dawnybee: There is some outrage from fans who think that Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay are acting legends and deserved nods, although they did receive them at the BIFAs.)

Supporting actress
Kate Winslet - Steve Jobs
Alicia Vikander - Ex Machina

Adapted screenplay
The Big Short - Adam McKay, Charles Randolph
Brooklyn - Nick Hornby
Carol - Phyllis Nagy
Room - Emma Donoghue
Steve Jobs - Aaron Sorkin (dawnybee: Very odd that he could get nominated from this since the film is not an adaptation of Jobs’ biography IMO considering that Sorkin and Jobs’ biographer readily admit that the film is largely fictionalized (conversations that never happened, people being places they weren’t). To me this goes beyond the general disclaimer at the end of biographical films that say things are changed for dramatic purposes. It’s like saying “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” is adapted from Lincoln’s letters. )
