Movie Post aka The Sequel-ining...

Jan 20, 2016 01:29

CW held their DC Movie Preview night whilst ABC aired their Capt. America 75th anniversary special. I’m ride or die DC so of course I…

…watched the trailers online instead of watching the DCU Movie special.

And I don’t mean the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer because I’m going in spoiler/plot/trailer free. No, I mean trailer for Suicide Squad!

My Hooligans!

The trailer builds on the teaser trailer from last year and gives an idea of how the film will approach the characters. Each character seemingly get flashbacks to how they came to be (we see Enchantress before her possession in this clip and the apparent chemical baptism that turns Harleen Quinzel into Harley Quinn.

I think the teaser trailer previously released is more indicative of the film's tone. I think this was just designed to show the bodacious aspect of it but I think it is actually going to be gritty. Just like the trailer for "Star Trek Beyond". Fans thought it was too lighthearted and Simon Pegg (who wrote it) said that the film isn't how the trailer depicts it.

I’m a die-hard Tom Hardy fan but I think Joel Kinnaman will be a better Rick Flagg because I think Kinnaman plays him more straight forward while Hardy would do something weird and make the character seem as weird as the people he’s trying to corral.

Maybe they’ll work together again

The DC special also gave info about their upcoming slate of films including Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg and Wonder Woman.

Why did they make Aquaman look like a light-skinned Nick Ashford?

Since the film was shot in Canada there is obviously a “Smallville” connection. Ted Whittall who played Rick Flagg on SV has a role in the film.

you might not recognize him because he’s not busting a naked Oliver Queen’s balls…literally

I’m less enthused about the Wonder Woman footage because I see the Zack Snyder inspired slo-mo shots that I loathe in his films. I’m hoping that is just in a few scenes or just to sell the footage to the fans. Also I think it’s bizarre to introduce Diana in Batman v. Superman and then have her standalone be an origin piece set in WW1. Porque?

But I love that Said Taghmaoui is in it

and I dig Chris Pine’s hair so that’s something, right?

~On the Chinese New Year it will be year of the Fire Red Monkey and while that sounds absolutely rad like an anime on Adult Swim that airs really late just so that only college students and meth addicts watch, I prefer 2016 to be the year of Taron Egerton.

I’m a big ol’ fan of Taron and I’m thrilled that someone so talented is actually getting the career he deserves (unlike Armie Hammer who deserves better; he’s never hurt anyone).

He was on “Gossip Girl” and I don’t even hate him. That means something!

Fresh out of drama school Taron booked the series “The Smoke” on SkyTV. The series only lasted a season. He did some theater

”The Last of the Haussmans” with Rory Kinnear and Julie Walters

Then booked his first film role in “Kingsman: The Secret Service”. In the time it took “Kingsman..” to be released he booked roles in “Legend” opposite Tom Hardy, “Testament of Youth” starring Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington. That was quickly followed by “Eddie the Eagle” produced by his “Kingsman” director Matthew Vaughn.

He’s been named one of Forbes top 30 under 30 and he’s on the shortlist for the BAFTA Rising New Star Award competing against John Boyega, Dakota Johnson, Bel Powely (who was wonderful in “A Royal Night Out”, but I haven’t seen her in the film she’s getting accolades for “Diary of a Teenage Girl”) and Brie Larson.

“Kingsman” put Taron on the map because he’s awesome in it and suddenly he was put on everyone’s longlist of actors to play young Hans Solo in the Hans Solo standalone Disney is planning. Another film that his name was bandied about for was Robin Hood. That role actually panned out for him and he was hired for the gig. FOX wanted him so badly that they put Robin Hood’s filming on hold in order for Taron to fulfill his contractual obligation to film the sequel to “Kingsman”.

Taron is currently filming the remake of 1987 TV movie “The Billionaire’s Boy Club”

the movie stars unfortunately named/looking Ansel Elgort, Ryan Rothman, Suki Waterhouse (former gf of Bradley Cooper), Billie Lourd, Emma Robert, Bokeem Woodbine, Jeremy Irvine, Kevin Spacey and an appearance by Judd Nelson who starred in the original.

and booked a voiceover gig in the animated film “Sing”.

Taron was able to take a break from filming “Billionaire’s Boys Club” to do a Q&A in Austin for a screening of “Eddie the Eagle” during the Drafthouse Alamo’s BNAT (Butt-Numb-A-Thon) where he took time to speak of the charms of Jackman’s arms.

And confirmed that “Kingsman” will be filming in June.

His “Kingsman” costar Mark Strong gave more spoilery details on Josh Horowitz’s podcast a couple of months ago

[Spoiler (click to open)]Strong quasi-confirmed Colin Firth’s involvement by responding to the Kingsman sequel question that he’s worked with Colin six times now so they can easily get back into a routine with each other. Firth’s character Harry Hart was killed in the film, something fans collectively gave an “uh-uh” to in fanfic and handwaved that Harry survived a point-blank gunshot. This is all, undoubtedly, good news to Taron who said he was working out ways for Harry to appear in the sequel.

Also adding to the Colin is returning theory, Strong said that the film will take place in Kentucky (where Harry was shot), in addition to London, New York and Singapore.

Edward Holcroft (“London Spy”, “Wolf Hall”) confirmed in a recent Rollacoaster interview that he’s also returning. His character, Charlie Hesketh’s, fate was not detailed in the film but it was assumed he died in the culling

~Awards season is still in play but let’s turn our eyes to the films that will be released in 2016---films that will hopefully be less underwhelming than the vast majority of the ones we endured in 2015.
