Movies I've Seen...Upcoming Films..

Jun 27, 2012 03:14

It’s officially summer (yes!) and the summer films have been a mixed bag (poor “Battleship”, “Avengers” heroes must have the power of mind control-a billion in box office?). This weekend saw Pixar’s 16th number one film with “Brave”. But I like to think of all of these films as the appetizers before “The Dark Knight Rises”.

It’s weird: either I’m not going to the right films or the cinema gods have been looking out for me. I’ve not gone to a film that has had the trailer for TKDR attached to it. It saves me from having to shield my eyes and ears. I have been trying my hardest to avoid anything major with the film. I skimmed through the Nolan’verse Batman pieces in July’s Empire. Literally skimmed, I barely made contact on whole words or pictures, as I was trying to get to section where producers, writers and directors talk about how Christopher Nolan has changed the game for superhero flicks and focus on the “The Dark Knight” and “Batman Begins” bits.

The one thing I allowed myself to read was this from Tom Hardy talking about the background of this picture.

Hardy:
It happened in the midst of a massive crowd scene on Wall Street in Manhattan, during a fight sequence between their two characters.

“It was the first time I ever heard Christian say he was tired,” Hardy remembers. “I was watching him for however many months getting beaten up and wet and cold, and he never said anything. Inside, I was dying, but I was thinking, ‘This can’t bother me because he’s not bothered.’ But on Wall Street, he just turned and said, ‘You know what? I’m exhausted.’ I said, ‘Me too.’”

“We stopped the fight and started hugging each other,” Bale adds.

*Ever the method actor, Bale says that he wants to really work with Tom as he feels that because of the separation of the suits he hasn’t had a chance to really work with any of his Batman costars. So he wants to do a project with Tom where there’s no barriers.

Those damn barriers to obscure his face!

Nolan is as obsessed by Tom’s mouth as I am

Nolan has what I have!

There’s no barriers between Christian and Wes Bentley as they work on Terence Malick’s “Knight of Cups”.

*I found my interest in Tom Hardy waning. It happens when I get really involved in something or somewhere. I develop my own backlash against it. So I would see all of Tom’s photos from “Cannes”

Where he was supporting “Lawless”

and read the many interviews from there and not feel anything about them. I wasn’t wowed by anything he said. Even his usual honesty was off-putting like an interview with Vulture where he says he wont’ comment about a Chinese film that Christian Bale did:

InterviewerYour Dark Knight Rises co-star Christian Bale recently made a movie in China.

Tom: Oh yeah. Awful. I'm not commenting. I love Christian.

That’s a comment, by the way, Tom.

And this entire exchange which IMO smacks of fear mongering. Yes, the US and the UK are in debt to China but to somewhat equate that to some “Red Dawn” situation where we’ll be overtaken is paranoid thinking.

Interviewer: I think people just admire honesty in a star, because they’re not used to getting it in an age where everything is so PR-managed.

Tom: Mmm, well it won’t be [like this] when China rolls on us in fifteen years and we’ll all have to speak Cantonese. Then people will have to grow the fuck up, won’t they? Up to a trillion dollars in debt, then we actually realize that we really are in debt and that China’s a major creditor, Brazil's got the fastest-growing economy and so does Russia … things is a-changin'!

Interviewer: Don’t go out and say that in front of the Chinese Pavilion on the Croisette.

Tom:
There’s nothing wrong with that! There’s more people in China than there are here. Who are we to stand in the way of what God wants, or whatever your concept of that is? No man can stop a tidal wave. "Thou shalt not pass"? Of course not! "I’m a tidal wave! Fuck you!" [Laughs.] It’s not personal, buddy, do you know what I mean? It’s just the rise and collapse of civilizations! History has had several thousand of them. Whatever, you face the fucking fear and you face it head on. Because it's going to happen anyway, and it’s not a bad thing! It’s called evolution. How's your Cantonese?

But then I read his GQ interview where the interviewer commented on how scrawny Tom looked in “Rocknrolla” compared to his other films.

Tom: Tom Hardy: Still am that scrawny little guy. I'm even scrawnier inside.

And it was as simple as that.

Love again

Tom and fiancee (some say wife now) Charlotte are still going strong.

I wish he’d stop doing that Bobby D finger point

I miss the Myspace pics

But Charlotte better watch out. Jessica Chastian is on the prowl.

Jessica, step back

*Tom was featured in Blag with Noomi Rapace. Which is funny since she stars in “Prometheus” with American Tom Hardy, Logan Marshall-Green.

And to cause confusion Tom attended the London premiere of “Prometheus” in support of his “Lawless” costar Guy Pearce.

And yes some press were calling Logan Tom Hardy at the premiere

American Tom Hardy calls Noomi Sistah Noomi

Rude!

With Logan now getting wider recognition because of “Prometheus” it means that all of my guys from “Traveler” are enjoying success.

Bomer, Marshall-Green and “Nikita”s Aaron Stanford

Saw “Prometheus”. I was more interested in the online discussions that the movie caused more than the film itself. I do not like science-fiction so I don’t know why I thought I would get anything from it other than being grossed out.

But thanks for the gifs!

Ancient Aliens meme? Fantastic

They know this should’ve been two of the other characters instead of David

Everyone seems to be down on the story but almost everyone loved Michael Fassbender.

He looks so devilish

*Back to Cannes. Also attending Cannes was Tom’s “Inception” and TDKR costar Marion Cotilliard. Marion was there for her film “Rust and Bone”.

with Ezra Miller who was there for his fourth time

“He’s the 99%

*Also at Cannes?

Gerard Butler

The always lovely Fay Bing Bing

Peter Berg. Actor/Director/great hugger “Battleship”

Jean Paul Gaultier

*Also there was the Cannes return of Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai.

Aishwarya was pummeled in the Indian press because she has not lost her baby weight after giving birth last year. The press felt she was doing their country a disservice seeing as she was considered the most beautiful actress in Bollywood.

Pre-baby

Now. Haters wish they were this gorgeous..

It didn’t get as much ink as Aishwary, but TMZ felt it necessary to make a post about how Bryce Dallas Howard hasn’t lost her baby weight, yet.

*Bryce has more pressing things to worry about. Her husband Seth Grable will not be returning to “Fringe” next season.

*Also at Cannes, Matthew Settle and Kelly Rutherford of “Gossip Girl”.

Despite the pics, I am still unconvinced they were dating. I know, what more do I need for proof besides these pictures and Matt’s near constant tweets to her? It’s the tweets that make me think he’s the biggest fan troll since Clif the Hillbilly Bodyguard of Jensen and Jared.

If Matt and Kelly were a couple he’d contact her privately. This weekend he tweeted a video of he and his daughter and the caption to Kelly beautiful weekend here, but I wish we were there with you!”

And that’s the essence of a lot of his tweets to her, “Wish you were here!” I swear he’s baiting their fans!

In a reply to a fan’s tweet to Kelly on if Matthew was going to a golf tournament with her.

He chimes in, with “…meeting her there ;)"

So I’m still not convinced, but I do love Matt’s fanservice.

~Though he has not confirmed his appearance in “The Dark Knight Rises” Cillian Murphy, while doing press for the indie film , “Red Lights” starring himself, Elizabeth Olsen and Sigourney Weaver, Murphy implored fans to just wait until TDKR come in and not try to figure out the mysteries of the story.

And the interwebs said “Shut your trap, Jonathan Crane and just look pretty.”

*Joseph Gordon-Levitt has already embarked on his post TDKR career. He’s directing his film debut “Don Jon’s Addiction” and he also wants to remake “Little Shop of Horror”.

He’d be smashing

~Movies I’ve Seen.

A film titled "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" being a disappointment?! Color me shocked. I blame myself. I get weird sometimes and decide to see films that no one else want to see like "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". But unlike LoEG, this "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" isn't good. And this is a movie that costars Anthony Mackie and Dominic Cooper.

Oh,Dominic Cooper

*Now I know why ex-girlfriend Amanda Seyfried jokes that they’ve agreed to have children with each other in case they don’t find partners.

Based on the book of the same name, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" stars Benjamin Walker as Abe Lincoln. The film starts off with the childhood loss of his mother at the hand of a vampire. Abe grows up and wants to avenge her death. Before he can, he meets up with a man who offers to show him the ways of vampire hunting (Cooper). His mentor warns him that he cannot have a life as normal people while on this quest. But his interest in freedom for slaves, politics and the love of Mary Tood eventually leads Lincoln to the White House. With the Civiil War waging he realizes that the vampires have a hand in the war and must stop them from taking over the country.

I just couldn't get over how much Ben looks like Liam Neeson. Which is funny to me because he's married to Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer and Meryl and Liam have done a film together.

That's what I took from the movie: Ben is a young Liam Neeson

Ben for GQ

Directed by Timur of "Wanted" and "9", the film was crafted specifically for 3D so without the glasses the washed out quality of the film was annoying. Also the action was too quick cut and frenetic that it was hard to even see what was going on. It was just a total let down.

But Next Movie, ever helpful, has come up with more Presidential mash-ups. Me, myself am waiting for Sojourner Truth: Ghostbuster.

Absolutely loved it. I hate that the adverts are portraying it like it’s a true comedy. There’s comedic moments for sure, but it’s more of a serio-comedy or maybe a dark comedy with serious undertones. I’d hate to think that people will go in thinking it’ll be this wacky film about the apocolypse when it’s really a tender snapshot of the final days of the world and a pair who befriends each other.

Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" finds Dodge (Steve Carell) suddenly single after his wife runs out on him--literally--when they get the news that an asteroid is colliding with the earth in 21 days. Embodying the idea of being lonely, but not alone, Dodge rather spend his last days not with his friends, but by carrying on his usual routine of work and then home.

By chance a neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley)wonders onto his fire escape. In the midst of a breakup and devastated that she has missed the last plane to England ever so that she could be with her family for the end, the two spend the evening talking about life and Dodge's lost love: his college sweetheart.

The next day when he escorts her home Penny presents him with misdirected mail. In the pile is a letter from Dodge's college sweetheart that was sent three months prior. She wants to reconnect. With no phone lines available, Dodge asks Penny to help him locate her and in exchange he will introduce her to his friend with a plane so that she can get to the UK to be with her family for the end.

As the film goes on they encounter other people as they prepare for the end, while Penny and Dodge get to use each other a sounding boards to discuss their life regrets. With time runnning out the two realize that even with impending doom there's still a lot of life left.

It's beautiful film that stayed with me for days. Knightley and Carell were a perfect pair and had surprising chemistry.

The soundtrack really adds to the film. Music is so evocative and plays such an important part of our lives whether we realize it or not (how often do you hear a song and it suddenly transports you back to a specific moment/era of your life?). So it makes perfect sense that music makes up alot of the scenes because we tend to rely on it to help demostrate what we are feeling when words can't or won't come.

Bonus Adam Brody as Penny's slacker boyfriend

Magic Mike

It's almost here! "Magic Mike" is almost here!!!

Does it live up to the hype? Not quite, but it exceeds my expectation because there's actually a story at play. Audiences can't just live on ass alone. Though it's a worthwhile endeavor.

"Magic Mike" stars Channing Tatum as Mike. Jack of All Trades by day and stripper by night (Alex from "Flashdance", is that you??), his dream is to have his own furniture buiding company. With the money he makes and the impending partnership with the owner of the stripclub he works for Dallas (Matthew McConaughey), Mike plows ::tee hee:: away in order to reach his dreams.

A chance meeting with struggling college drop-out Adam (Alex Pettyfer) finds Mike introducing Adam to the stripping life to the dismay of Adam's older sister (Cody Horn).

As Adam aka The Kid falls in easily with the lifestyle, Mike is beginning to want more for himself.

This reviewer pretty much cinches my feelings about the film.

The movie starts out in a big way with a great performance with the guys, especially Tatum who is a beast on the dancefloor. I bet Channing walks into clubs and people want to do a dance off, recreate "You Got Served". He can really dance. His natural talent is evident. The audience went crazy in the theater as if he was really stripping in the room. It was like a concert. It was madness.

But as the movie goes on the club scenes fall to the background and the bigger story comes to the fore with Mike beginning to realize that he's spinning his wheel as people he relied on are moving forward with their lives.

While not the strongest actor (Keanu Reeves 2.0), Tatum makes you root for him, he's a likeable everyman--an everyman with a rocking body--but an everyman just the same. He plays comedy well and is so earnest you just want to throw your arms around him.

The other men, with the exception of Pettyfer, are more in the background. Unfortunately their individual routines are very short. I'm hoping there'd be a director's cut with full performances (even without them this film nearly clocks in at 2hrs)

Barely has anything to do, poor scrawny guy

Needed more Bomer and Manganiello

The film closed out the L.A Film Festival this weekend.

The Men of “Magic Mike”
*Adam Rodriguez, Alex, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey and Channing

The men with Cody Horn and Chan’s writing partner/co-producer

I swear McConaughey is the only cast member I’ve seen pics of Alex hanging with

Channing getting’ money on the press junket

Magic Mike cast
at 1:35 Joe and Matt talk about their strippers name in which you take your first pet and your street name. Joe's Bunny Oxford (Matt remarks "That sounds like a fiesty Englishman. A prince in the streets and a freak in the sheets.") Matt's Eunice Dixie. Cody's is Rain St. Cloud and Alex's Waggles York something something).

True confession time: I watch this scene on mute and have Rihanna's "Birthday Cake" playing so that I can pretend Pettyfer's dancing to it. I hate that I've ever seen Pettyfer's face!!!

I think his press is true: he's more than likely a gigantic dickbag. He was a child model and child actor. He pretty much has always looked like this.

Call Chris Hansen

Essentially, people have been trying to get that dick since he was ten, so I can see how that would create an overinflated sense of self.

But look at him!! The body wants what the body wants

Hopefully he can still get work because with his looks there is no reason why this fool isn't in as many movies as Channing.

Alex awarded with a Young Hollywood Award. There's hope yet.

Upcoming Films

*The remake that is sure to be bloody awful.

Carrie

It stars Chloe Grace Moretz as the title character and Julianne Moore stepping in some pretty big shoes as the mother, the role that Piper Laurie killed in.

*I’m all for people getting a chance to show another facet of themselves, but I think Tyler Perry should’ve started out slowly. He had a small part in the last “Star Trek” film and now he’s jumping into a starring role for the first time in a production that isn’t his own. Perry takes over the Alex Cross role from Morgan Freeman in the upcoming film “Alex Cross”

You know, that character from “Kiss the Girls” and "Along Came a Spider"

Alex is on the hunt for a madman Michael Sullivan.

Played by real life alleged madman Matthew Fox

Why can’t Alex Cross call in Madea in to take this dude out? She’s always packing.

*Quentin Tarantino’s follow up to “Inglorious Basterds” is another revenge flick. This time tackling slavery.

Jamie Foxx stars as Django ( a role Will Smith was up for but dropped out to do “Men in Black: 3”. He’s still a vocal supporter of the film) as Django. A slave who is recruited by a man who is hunting down slave traders (Christoph Waltz). Django is the only one who has seen the faces of the traders, the same ones who took Django’s wife (Kerry Washington).

This film really will be off the chain. I can’t wait.

*“Lord of the Rings” fans still have some time to wait until the release of “The Hobbit”. In the interim director Peter Jackson has been updating fans with video blogs. I’m not a hardcore LoTR fan but I love how these films have created a sense of family in the cast. It’s really sweet.

PJ tweeted this picture in December of the White Council reunion
*Cate Blanchett, Sir Ian McKellan and Hugo Weaving

I’m interested in the film for Aidan Turner, the lovely lad who played John Mitchell in BBC’s “Being Human”

Still hot!

Aidan plays Kili, who in one of the production videos is described as the Robbie Williams of the dwarves.

Aidan recently celebrated a birthday. Not being on Twitter, his girlfriend tweeted this message from him.

A fan posted this encounter

Aidan and two of his “The Hobbits” costars were photographed for a recent gallery showing.

*Aidan and his former “Being Human” costar Russell Tovey attended the release party for the aviator glasses line that Luke promotes.

Luke can now add action star to his resume. Luke will be the villain in the next “Fast and Furious” film.

I’ve subtitled it “Fast and Furious: Dom and Brian Get Married

Yep, these guys are at it again

Dwayne Johnson will return. Dwayne had joked that he’s the franchise Viagara: he injects life to your franchise. But he’s kinda flaccid right now since “GI: Joe: Retaliation” has been pushed back.

Word is that the test screenings have been terrible and people want more Channing Tatum. Supposedly he’s only in the film for ten minutes as this is about different Joes.

*The musical I’ve never seen comes to the theaters as a film I’ll never see.

*Does Leo know that his lovehild is in "Kill Your Darlings" with Daniel Radcliffe?

*When are bad guys going to realize they don’t want none of Liam Neeson? You’re going to lose. “Taken 2” should be subtitled, “Bad Guys Don’t Think Fat Meat is Greasy” or “Baddies Getting What They Deserve”.
