AMC--Chapter Thirty-Eight

Jan 20, 2006 09:13

In chapter thirty-eight, we return to Tirion to witness the happy (?) reunion between Nolofinwë and Findekano. I'm keeping this chapter at a general rating, although it does contain some sexuality, but nothing graphic.

I had thought that I would have to rewrite the next chapter; as it turns out, the next two chapters are written and safe in my ( Read more... )

Yay! It seems I am the first to spot the chapter and comment on it!
Comment on finding it, anyway!

Now I'm off to read it!

Another excellent chapter and one that was not so chilly and unusual, while being written from Nolofinwe's POV. Remember how you enjoyed the fact that several of your readers warmed up to Nolofinwe after the story finally took his point of view? As opposed to thinking him cold and stiff(pun not intended). Well, I really don't like him. So it was funny to watch Arafinwe going about his merry way and embarassing his older brother with indiscreet questions. And a bit sadistic to see him react to how much Findekano has grown attached to Feanaro's family.

“Do you not recall, Nolofinwë? You gave your permission that I adopt him. He is happier here,” and when I looked at my son-or was he Curufinwë’s?-his eyes weren’t blue like mine anymore but that eerie, bright silver-blue flame-color like his cousin Tyelkormo’s that has always struck me as wicked, like the eyes of a beast in the dark.Brrr! Bad Nolofinwe despite the wonderful description of Feanorian eyes. And I was almost expecting Findekano to get home, have his little reunion with his ( ... )

He's not very likeable...but I do hope that his reasons for being the way he is shows through. He's jealous and nursing an inferiority complex...and puzzled by being the oldest and the middle son, as frenchpony pointed out in a comment below. I feel bad for him...but he is a sort of bastid. And I love forcing him to interact with Arafinwe. The two are such different characters, and Arafinwe does love digging at Nolofinwe's nerves. Plus, I love Arafinwe.... *huggles him*

In order to bring Nolofinwe to the "full brother in heart" point that you love so much, I have to start him a little low and have him evolve as a character, so I hope you like him more as the story progresses. ;)

And, imagine what it's going to be like for Nolofinwe later, when Aredhel will be old enough to hang out with her cousins and roam the lands with them for days.Lol! True! You have to wonder what went through both ( ... )

Nolofinwë does seem to get the short end of the family stick, doesn't he? The poor guy is stuck between being the oldest child and the middle child, and it looks like he ended up with the worst of both worlds. He has the responsibility of the oldest child of the King and Queen, especially since Fëanor isn't around, but he's got that awkwardness of a middle child, the one who is not first and is not the baby. It's hardly surprising that he'll favor Turukano.

He also seems to be in the awkward position of being too smart for his level of education. He seems like he has the brains to equal Fëanor, if not the manic energy, but he was pulled out of school before he had the chance to learn everything that he was capable of learning. It's no wonder that he seems a little jealous of Findekano and that Maitimo irritates him.

As usual, your comments are so spot-on....

I've always been interested by the idea of Curufinwe and Nolofinwe and how Tolkien distinguishes between Feanor's kind of knowledge and Fingolfin's. Unfortunately for Fingolfin, a lot of that at which he excels goes on behind the scenes...no fancy recitations and flashy gemstones to display for him. His sort of "wisdom" is intuitive, not something to be learned from a book. When he's doing his job really well, no one notices. When he screws up, of course, everyone does.

Bobby and I used to talk about this, being in the homeland security and criminal justice fields respectively, about how if we did our jobs perfectly, no one should have reason to notice our existence. But if we mess up once, it smears the headlines, making our jobs sometimes thankless and frustrating. I think Nolofinwe is stuck in a similar bind.

The bit about being caught between being an eldest and a middle son...how true! Really, he acts as his father's heir--certainly more so than Feanaro--but when the chips are down, ( ... )

It is a very strange predicament. Fëanor, I think, really treasures his position as the heir, not so much because he wants to be King, but because he seems to see being the heir as a special honor. He doesn't want to do the work of the position -- he's just as happy to let Fingolfin do that for him -- but, boy howdy, he wants the perks that come with it, and damned if Fingolfin is going to walk away with the perks. It will be oh so easy for Morgoth to convince Fëanor that Fingolfin is after his treasured position later on in life.

Ecthelion: (surprised) I have fans?

Dawn: Dear, if you only knew....

I happen to harbor a small liking for Ecthelion and can't seem to help giving cameos to my favorite minor characters. ;)

Lol! Yay, thanks! :) He's certainly fun to write.

I really start to feel rather sorry for your Fingolfin. I mean, he is rather stuffy and stuck-up, but it seems, whatever he does, he's always only second best, and it's more than obvious whom Finwe favours most. I think I can somehow understand how he must feel. For example in the scene where Finwe points out Fingolfin should have invited Feanor for the breakfast. Ouch. That must have hurt. I had to laugh heartily at his conversations with Finarfin, though. These were priceless and Finarfin is nothing less than adorable (and how he looks forward to his son being born is utter cuteness!). :-D

Realizing where the conversation is going, I feel my face flush and stop speaking, and Arafinwë throws his head back and laughs. “While what, Nolofinwë? While what?”

*giggles*

I've somehow got the feeling that Fingolfin sometimes wishes to have his brother's easy charms. When he says all these nasty things about Finarfin (for example that he has no appreciable intelligence or talents) he sounds extremely jealous to me. It's funny somehow, but ( ... )

When I started AMC, I couldn't like Fingolfin at all. Well, my Feanor muse wouldn't allow it; whenever I started thinking nicely or sympathetically about his little bro', he'd take me by the arm and shuffle me away, saying, "Now, now, dear, that is not a proper line of thinking." And it seemed that Fingolfin got more than his share of sympathy in the fanfic community, so I figured I'd leave the Fingolfin-love to someone else.

But, being the obstinate and soon-to-be-brave-one-day-high-king that he is, Fingolfin insisted on being heard (which, come to think of it, might explain why Feanor proceeded to delete then miswrite his chapter and generally make my life miserable), and I found sympathy for him. He's stuck forever in Feanor's shadow, as second-best, if that. And Finwe doesn't hide his feelings much on this either. Also, I've often felt that Indis probably favored Arafinwe ( ... )

Now, I can so see him doing that! ;-) What I like about your story is that we see the events that take place through so many different eyes. I guess as soon as Feanor takes over again I'll be thinking of Fingolfin as a stupid git once more. ;-)

And don't worry about your rambling! That's some thoughts really worth thinking about in my most humble opinion. :-)

And it must be hard for him to work so hard and see Arafinwe doing nothing and yet reaping benefits for his natural charms.

Oh, it must! Arafinwe is simply naturally cute. *sighs* That word again! ;-)

Actually...it was. *blushes* I don't think that Felak is that clever of an author. :^P

I'll simply believe you did it subconsciously! :-)

*is closet Ecthelion fangurl*

Who couldn't be? That whole balrog thing always impressed me. :-)

My parents arrive first, a few minutes early, as is there way.

Oops. "their"

Despite the fact that Arafinwë has no appreciable intelligence or talents, I sometimes get the feeling that he is making fun of me.

LOL!!!
Nah, Nolo, no one would make fun of you...

I realize that I am growing to despise Russandol almost as much as I despise his father.

*coughjealouscough*

I wonder if he will long for the Sea, like his mother’s people, or if he will be spirited and carefree and utterly useless, like my brother.

Hehe...Now, Arafinwe has uses! Well, at least one, and I'm sure it's quite an important one to Earwen...;P

Also, I'm going to hug Carnistir, because I feel like I haven't done that for awhile! *cuddling ensues*

Thank you. :)

*coughjealouscough*

Lol! Yes, I think you're right on with that. But doesn't he have reason? The guy does work hard--and for what? To be stuck as second-best, no matter what.

Well, that's true too, but I was thinking along the lines of "It must be genetic!" ;)
