Just got back from Superman Returns.
And eh. I mean it wasn't horrible. It was a pretty good movie as superhero stuff goes. And although I'm a die hard DC girl, I've never been that hot about Superman. I think you could tell how I felt considering I was wearing my Batman shirt tonight. :D I know that Bryan Singer was trying to go more adult and contemporary with it, but it came off just kind of drab and sad. Heroes should be larger than life, and really, Supes was only that a couple of times during the big saving scenes. Yes, I understand that he can fly. I knew that already. I don't need to show it to me endlessly. SR is 2 and 1/2 hours long and I could tell. It felt long, and not just because after hour one I had to go pee.
Kate Bosworth did nothing for me as Lois. Lois is kind of an annoying charactor. If she's too wishy washy/sweet (as Bosworth's performance was), you don't buy her as a hard nosed reporter. If she's too brash (as in Margot Kidder and the chick from Smallville) she's just too obnoxious to care about. It's probably a tough part to play. Either way the writers and the actress go, I'm pretty much not going to like her. I hated her in the comics too.
Brandon Routh was kind of cardboardy as Superman. I liked him as Clark Kent much more. I would have loved to see more of Clark. I want to see him be a reporter too. I mean he was good enough to get his job back after having disappeared for five years, but we never see him do anything to earn that. I know the movie's called Superman Returns and not Clark Kent Returns, but I think that more of Clark would have balanced out some of the woodenness of Superman.
I do feel bad for James Marsden who somehow always ends up playing the second fiddle in every movie I've seen him in. The kid wasn't very good either, but then again it's not like he had more to do that be a plot point. While the CG and everything was above par, there was really nothing in the movie that wasn't a retread of the Christopher Reeve films. I just...It wasn't a bad movie, but I think it needed some tighter editing to make it work. I never felt the threat of Luthor. Kevin Spacey was just there. I think I've been spoiled by the Lex from Morrison's run on JLA. He was a criminal mastermind, not just a guy with a bunch of hair pieces and a geeky rock obsession.
PS-
minotaurs was right so long ago. Jimmy is totally gay for Clark.
One of the highlights of the evening was that I got to see the Spider-Man trailer on the big screen. Lots of little stuff going on there that's easy to miss. Damned quick cuts.
