Fire Update 10am 21.10.13 and Introducing Nemo the Refugee Cicada

Oct 21, 2013 10:14

I'm apologising in advance for not replying to comments etc, as it looks like we are going to be in for a very busy and scary day and I may not have time until... who knows?

The hot, dry Nor'wester that's been predicted is finally on its way and is expected a bit later. I'm really hoping it peters out. They're saying it's blowing at around 50km per hour. More fires have sprung up and the Lithgow Mines fire has spread, the Mount Victoria and Springwood fires have gathered momentum again and are expected to join up with the already massive Mines fire to form a massive fire that will be pretty much unstoppable and is feared will not only rampage through the Blue Mountains, but spread down into Sydney, and into my hamlet and then the local town of LIthgow.

Firefighters have been working non stop all night to try to stabilise perimeters, We had fires across four of the neighbours opposite me's yards this morning which was quite stressful and yesterday afternoon, fire took a house and outbuildings about 1km south of me, despite four crews fighting it and the south east ridge just down from me is on fire again.

It's going to be a bad day for many today and for the next couple of days, most probably.

I'll post updates if I have time, but fear not, while my house is in danger, we're not. We have a way to evacuate and barring a cataclysmic firestorm racing at epic speed, we'll be fine.

I'll stick around and try to do my bit while I can, but when they tell me to get out, or if I feel it's a good idea to nick off before that, I'll be gone with the son, furkids and a refugee of the fires I've adopted for now.

Yes,  I managed to rescue one victim of the fires and they're resting and hopefully recuperating on a purple pillow in my lounge room. Sounds comfy? Yes, but I know what they'd prefer more. Soon, they'll be on a cut tree branch, happily sucking sap.
