When she had last talked with Liana, she had asked for help. Help for what exactly? Liana had told her to think about what she was doing, what she really wanted to do, where she wanted to go with her life. Katharyn thought with each brush stroke.
She really did need help; she wasn’t sure how to get though. Katharyn let out a big sigh and lay on her bed as she waited for Sterling to return home from work. She needed to give him some notice to find a new place.
Food. Food for two, one cannot starve when there are two to feed.
Must be a good mother, mother for him. She needs to have him, have him stay. She needs to see him again.
At the coffee shop, a man, one of her longtime friends, joined her. They made small talk while waiting for their food to arrive.
“I’m glad you invited me to lunch, Danielle.”
“I-didn’t invite you, I invited him” She said the last word with unnatural emphasis.
“No, Danielle. You invited me!” He started, “the father of OUR child. I don’t know who he is, but you made love with me. We’re having a baby together.” He was desperate. How could she be like this, forget him so easily; she seemed so passionate that night.
“It’s HIM, Greg,” she cried out, “he’s the father of this child.” She motioned toward her abdomen.
“Danielle… how can you not remember?” he asked her with sadness flooding his voice.
“I need to go to the washroom.” She replied.
In the bathroom, she washed her face, was he really not the father of her child? It was so real; she didn’t remember anything about Brad.
While Danielle was in the washroom, Brad collected himself. He paid the bill and left, there was a lot to do, a lot to think about. Most of which involved Danielle.
When she got back to the table, Brad was gone. “How could he have left me?” She asked herself aloud, quietly.
As the weeks went on, she began to think more before bed. Maybe Brad was jealous of Greg. Greg was younger, had a better build, more hair. “That has to be it.” She told herself.
All alone in her apartment, Liana held back her screams. The contractions were getting worse by the minute. She made her way to the phone and called for an ambulance.
It was peaceful in her room, the nurses would check in on her every so often.
“May I get you anything, Mrs. Swiss?” A casual nurse asked as she leaned over Liana, checking charts and her condition.
“My husband,” Liana half joked.
“He called and said he would be here soon,” the nurse passed the message on asked she walked out. Liana was excited.
Greg rushed in the room; he was out of breath. “I-had to run,” he panted, “from work.” Liana jumped up from her bed.
“I’m so glad you could finally get here.” She whispered in his ear as they embraced.
“How is the baby?” He asked excitedly.
“Babies, and they’re fantastic.” She matched his excited tone. The couple agreed on the names Logan and Ava.
A couple months later, Gregory and Liana watched their twins happily as they played in their bouncy chairs.
They got along again. Maybe all they needed was a dramatic change, to help each other realize. She did still worry about Danielle though.
“I think we need to redo this as a nursery.” Liana started, “it’s not baby friendly at all, and the twins can be moved around more now.”
“I agree; this is not a kids room.”
As time went on Gregory and Liana found themselves falling into a routine.
A strict routine involving diapers, bottles and frequent naps. Liana barely got out of the house, and Greg only got out of the house for work.
Liana went back to her novel while the twins were down for the night; a thought continuously crossed her mind.
She hadn’t heard a word from Katharyn in a few months.
