So we were in APUSH, (history class for the uninitiated) and an interesting little topic came up that I felt worthy for your pondering said that its retarded that they dont distinguish between the college kids and business men and the unemployed and high school drop outs for the draft.
it got me thinking. I asked a few people (aka kevin and james) and james and kevin both agreed that while realistically its an unlikely thing, that it makes sense. Well I know I am painfully liberal but I was kinda taken back by this. See I didnt realize that being rich made your life more valuable than being poor. Now the most plausible argument for their stance which I could reason is that the people who run businesses and who are college grads are contributing in other equally valuable ways. This is undeniable that they do contribute and not fighting in the war doesnt make you not part of the fight, but are you telling me that theres no one else that can fill in for these business men if they get drafted. The way I see it, every american man (i dont think women should fight, different post) should be eligeble for the draft regardless of his social stature. If a 30yr old stock broker is drafted, there is no fucking way he should be able to pass the buck to some kid who dropped out of highschool cause his mom got cancer and he had to support his family. What makes anyone think that its okay for a poor man to die but not a rich man because he didnt have the same problems that the other man did. I will say that the draft should be preferential to family men. A family man has obligations to his children before his country. Basically the whole idea of a draft sucks and I hope that none of us ever have to be drafted or have to have someone taken from us by the draft. I will say that if you live in this country, you should be as eligeble to fight for it as anyone else, being a poor businessman doesnt make you a poor American or a poor human. I think there is just way to much classism in the world, you arent a bad human being because you have less money.
