Adopting a pet

Remember when a stray dog gave birth to five puppies in our property? I wrote about it here. The puppies stayed with us for about three weeks.

Five cute puppies

We fell in love with all five of them.

They kept Stella amused. Lily and Soph fell in love. We had to create makeshift barricades/cages to prevent them from crossing the street. We never got to capture the mother. She was scary. She bit two strangers.

Puppy dog eyes. It was hard to say good bye. But we had to let them go. Three pups went to Lily's kindergarten teacher. Two went to Patrick's contact in the homeowner's association.

I contacted both PAWS and CARA Philippines to ask for assistance with the stray dogs. Both said they worked with volunteers in helping foster animals until they could have them adopted. Both didn't have space in their kennels. They had veterinary services but neither had resources to help capture the mother dog. To make a long story short, we became foster parents of the puppies until we had them adopted. But the mother dog never got captured, immunized or spayed/neutered.

It was hard to see my daughter cry her heart out when she saw the puppies being taken away. She knew we couldn't keep them. But her heart is small and sensitive. She cried... a lot. We visited the teacher last month and said hello to the three dogs. They are fine and happy.

Like I mentioned in this post, we had an interesting day in Greenbelt 5 last Saturday. We made rag dolls out of retasos. Then we saw a pet adoption booth in the plaza. Sophia saw the signs around the mall. She is a cat person. No doubt about it. Remember her stray cat scratch drama that led us to RITM to get anti-rabies shots?

Adopt-a-cat. For more info go to CARA's website.

So we checked out the CARA adoption event. CARA stands for Compassion and Responsibility for Animals

In an instant, she fell in love with this one. Her name is Collage. I don't know why she picked out Collage. There must have been 25 cats there. It was love at first sight.

Collage

We let her "communicate" with Collage. Then three minutes later she was begging us to let her adopt the cat. Adoption was only P800 and the carrying cage was P550. But obviously it wasn't about the money. It was about the responsibility. We do not have space for a four legged pet inside the house. I can only handle birds, fish and an aquatic turtle. My turtle died tragically last year. I cried over him. Birds, I find high maintenance. So right now we have little fish. As much as I want a dog, I know it'll take too much out of us. So we don't have a dog. And a cat... we'll that's just out of the question -- a) we are not cat people b) we can't take care of pets at home and c) we have a toddler. Patrick told her she can have a cat when she's 12. But I honestly don't know what we'll say when she's 12.

I have to admit that even though I'm not a cat person, I have a soft spot for them because of my daughter. She asked me why I went near Collage, knowing I don't like cats. I told her because I knew she loved cats so much so I'm trying to love them too. Truth was, the only cat I loved was Nigel, my nephew in New York. But he's in cat heaven now.

Nigel the 30 pound cat. He belonged to my SIL. Here's my BIL Fr Dennis taking him to the vet a few years ago.

Saying goodbye to Collage.

It was hard for Soph to say bye. She didn't want anyone else to get Collage. She wanted it to be hers. But we explained that it would be a good thing if Collage found a new home. We got to explain the whole process of adoption. And luckily we witnessed one...

This little guy found a new home. He was meowing a lot while walking through the mall in his cage. The kids made up a story about how happy he'll be when he sees his comfy new home.

If you are interested in having a pet, please consider adopting one instead of buying one from a pet shop. These cats and dogs need permanent homes. You may view their adoption gallery here. Coincidentally, Collage is the first cat listed.
