Last Saturday, we had a perfect day in a mall, ironically. It was filled with new experiences, which I promise to write about. We were supposed to have a quick lunch but I decided to squeeze in some Christmas shopping. On the way to Beabi to pick up some gift items, I saw a little workshop booth. All by accident...
Rag doll making workshop
The ragdoll kits from Manikako
It was a one-time-only activity for the benefit of Habitat for Humanity. If you had x-amount worth of receipts from Greenbelt 5 you can get one free doll making kit. Or if you wanted, you could just donate to Habitat and get a kit. They had volunteers onsite to help cut and sew. So we just donated, and got two kits.
The kits look like this. I also ended up buying a few more kits - to give as gifts to my niece in Toronto. And to make some more dolls at home.
What an amazing program! I love everything about it. Manikako teaches children how to be creative and crafty, how to use and reuse old scraps, how to make things by hand, and how to play like real children. They do these workshops in marginalized communities to teach the kids new skills and so they can play and have toys of their own. They also work with abused children. The actual kits are made by a group of mothers who used to not have work, but now have a new livelihood because of Manikako. The fabric and materials come from retasos, donated old clothes or left over scrap material from factories. You must check out their website at
manikako.com.
Each kit comes with full instructions.
And complete materials.
Here's a sample ragdoll. Everything is hand-stitched. I don't think I saw a glue gun.
The kids worked on their pieces for about an hour and a half. Patrick stayed with them, while I did some shopping for presents. He phoned me, "It's not just going to be 20 minutes. It'll be a couple of hours. It's complicated. But really amazing."
Sophia drew her doll design.
Sophia's doll, it's eyes being sewn on. I love the detail! And how specific/exact it is to her drawing.
Lily's doll drawing... of course with eye lashes.
Making the hair and crown
Lily's doll, based on her drawing. She calls it Rapunzel.
That night, they slept beside their dolls. This is Sophia.
And her perfect doll!
And this is Lily.
Watch this short video about Manikako. It made me smile... (really good animation, great message)
