Architecture talk

.

Last month I was invited by the students of the University of the Philippines College of Architecture to speak about architecture and mass media. This was part of their ACLE or Alternative Classroom Learning Experience. It was a huge honour for me to be asked by one of the best universities in the country, so I made sure to save the date as early as July when Maricar De Dios of their student association emailed me. Problem though, UNICEF also had a scheduled trip to Sarangani province. I made it work somehow - travelled to Sarangani and back just in time for my talk in UP (a little late). I went straight from the airport to Quezon City, which explains my disheveled look.

Maricar de Dios was the one who invited me to speak.

Thrilled at the standing ovation. Touched.

My talk with the UP Architecture students touched a bit on the story of Urban Zone, as there were many fans of the show there. But really I emphasized the importance of a few planning themes: relevance of street scapes, the idea of neighbourhoods and the concept of preservation and adaptive re-use.

It was a wonderful couple of hours. I loved it! And I think they did too. After my talk the students presented me with the most wonderful presents -- the coolest plaque and a huge book on architecture.

Some of the UP Architecture students. There were more.

Thank you for inviting me, UP.
