you finally get to see my paintings

Oct 01, 2006 01:52

ok... i know you all thought this would never happen, but last night i finally got my new digital camera up and running, and documented my work. so now, like a good nerd, i'm posting it on my blog. i don't want to say too much, other than:
1. all of these are small.
2. they're all composed of cut pieces of colored paper that have been painted in gouache, or drawn on in colored pencil, or both. then i paste them to a wooden board "canvas."
3. i used to work really really big in grad school, and i'm still kinda getting used to the whole small-scale thing.
4. i'm not gonna explain these to death in this post, but i might get into it a bit in the future.

without further ado, here is one i literally finished last night at about 2:30 in the morning:

Alert, 2006 (mixed media: colored pencil, gouache and paper collage on board) 18" by 24"

Blanket, 2005 (mixed media: colored pencil, gouache and paper collage on board) 16" by 16"

... Blanket was the first small painting i had spent any extended amount of time on since i was about 20 years old. i think of it as more of a sketch than anything at this point. in fact, i think it kinda sucks. but i'm posting it anyway because the digital image turned out well, and why not, right?

A Sunday Morning Midnight, 2005 (mixed media: colored pencil, gouache and paper collage on board) 18" by 24"

... i used iridescent paint in this one, which is why the image has a little glare to it. i couldn't quite get rid of it. sorry if it's unclear.

Costume Party, 2005 (mixed media: colored pencil, gouache and paper collage on board) 16" by 16"

... i posted about Costume Party a while back, actually. it is a painting with a dress, if you remember that entry. click on that link to see the gloria swanson dress i used as a catalyst.

I Don’t Wanna Sleep, I Don’t Wanna Think, 2006 (mixed media: colored pencil, gouache and paper collage on board) 18" by 24"

... i began to feel more like a "real artist" around the time i painted this. whatever that means. this is the one where i stopped "holding back," for better or worse. (meh, i'm talking too much)

Be Quiet, 2006 (mixed media: colored pencil, gouache and paper collage on board) 18" by 24"

... i really enjoyed painting those laundry lines. also, for scale purposes-- and since i can do as i wish with my new camera, here (below) is me holding one of the little pigeons from Alert prior to pasting it on...

my hand is sorta gross.

and finally, for scale/narcissism purposes, this is me in front of I Don't Wanna Sleep, I Don't Wanna Think...

... i could use a shave in that picture!
