Saiyuki: would you like a psychotic breakdown with your gut stab wounds?

And now we get to the Hakkai backstory. Wow. There's angst, and there is fucked up, and then there is this. Wow. He's got to be SO irretrievably broken. I mean, he was a human who became a demon, because he's had the blood of a thousand demons on his hands. That's...ummmm. I usually like to rewatch angsty scenes, but these ones are just...I don't think I want to.

What an unbelievably horrible thing to happen to you. I also cannot blame him in the least for what he did. When what's-his-name goes "you killed my whole clan. All for one woman" I want to scream "of course!" You took his OTP, tortured and raped her, and he came to get her. What do you thnk he should do? And the pathetic villagers, just giving her up because they were afraid. And after all of that, Kanan does what she does, in front of his eyes, and he cannot stop her. And she does it with his knife. The thing is, I don't blame her: she's been held in that place for months probably, raped and tortured repeatedly both by the monster and god knows who else. And now she is pregnant with the monster's child. She is completely strung out and fucked up. But the horrible thing is that Hakkai just wanted her back, he would deal with the monster offspring and her trauma and everything. He just wanted her back. But I can see why she just wanted death.

And that scene where he remembers Kanan telling him she loves his hands because they are beautiful is quite romantic and dreadfully sad. And he remembers his telling her he's now making enough money to support her. And then she tells him that now neither of them would have to be lonely anymore. Yeah. Shall you have some strichinine or wrist-slitting with that?

The thing that also struck me is how human Sanzo is with Hakkai. Their quiet conversation about trust is as open as we've ever seen Sanzo. In a way, they are equals. Sanzo knows the backstory (I wonder how. But don't spoil me) and really knows Hakkai. And I love Sanzo going ballistic when he finds Goku taken. He'd rather swallow his tongue than admit it, but he loves the brat.

But yeah, Hakkai's sanity must be held together by spit and frayed thread. That bit where he forgets who he is for a bit? Heartbreaking. No wonder he is always so pleasant and even tempered. It's all repression because if he allowed himself to feel otherwise, he'd either die or kill. And tht horrible fortune-teller really is awful. The end, with Hakkai, wistfully saying he wishes his lifeline was a bit longer because "Kanan, I'd like to live a little for myself" is sad. But Goku drawing a line with a magic marker is perfect. Saiyuki gets better and better.
