Haha I said "other than 'he's hot'" in my last comment! But yes, Damon has definitely developed as a character (and he may change your mind just a tad bit, knowing your taste for angst ;D) and shows a lot more depth but the fact remains that he is a horrible, messed up guy. Especially to the (few) people he cares about.
Nevertheless I adore him as a character if only because he brings me delicious Stefan angst and I have a mild (*cough* intensely disturbing) love for screwed up sibling dynamics. Screw Damon/Elena! Damon/Stefan brotherliness is the only relationship that will ever work for Damon! (...okay, I need to stop now.)
Once serial murder enters it, I am out from liking a character (see Spike, who was sexy and witty and I could not ever like him because of the killing).
I can see finding Damon a fun character, I just don't get seriously shipping him with Elena.
I find him sympathetic at times because I'm a psychology nut and have an insatiable need to pick people apart. BUT despite his very, tiny little piece of goodness unhappily wedged in that puny black heart of his, there is absolutely no way he could function in a real relationship outside of messing with Stefan.
I don't ship Damon with anyone because he is psychotic and would eat you if he got hungry. But I still find him entertaining. Even if I hope he does get staked by someone in the end.
Oh, give him time. I felt the same way for a good dozen eps -- he has one relationship in particular where he's a TEXTBOOK abusive boyfriend and it's really really creepy -- but then he falls in love, real love, and starts getting layers and has to deal with all these feelings, and it's painful and uncertain and delicious really engaging TV.
If he doesn't start hitting your buttons by his heartsick sniffing of Elena's hair, I'll eat my hat.
We have a lot of tastes in common, but we part ways here :)
Seriously, there is nothing he can do to make me ship him. I disliked Spike (and S/B) and book!Damon (and would have never wanted him with book!Elena) and he did plenty of shippy angsting. Just - no.
Reading the books after watching the show makes book!Damon look positively saintly, let me tell you. (Though, TBH, even though I would have liked him as a teen, reading them now without the TV show, I'd probably barely notice him half the time. Though I do kinda like the Bonnie/Damon bits in the last book. Which notably don't crop up until we learn that he didn't do the squickier stuff we previously thought he did, and after he's largely behaving.)
After reading your list of TV!Damon's misdeeds, Book!Damon seems angelic in comparison, you are right. (Side note, am I losing my mind, or do Matt and Bonnie hook up at some point in the novels?)
I was pretty bored by Damon in the books, tbh, and I did read them when I was 30. The only thing I remember at all is when Elena sort of turned into a vampire and forgot everything and thought Damon was her OTP, and that was for the Elena and Stefan angst - I don't even remember Damon's reaction, tbh.
OK, even without knowing half this stuff I could never ship them but after this? No way.
If the show ever goes D/E, I am out of here. Not for any shippy reasons but because it would indicate the writers are insane and have no idea how people operate.
Yes. I mean, I like Elena/Stefan fairly well, but I would actually rather she was single, at least until she was a bit older? And would be fine with them being platonic, and have no interest in either of them being with anyone else, but Damon/Elena would hit almost every "hells no!" button I have.
(I also don't think Damon is actually in love with Elena. I think he thinks he is and wants to be, but is in love with Katherine and only Katherine, at least at this point, but is trying to transfer it to Elena. I think it's very notable that his potentially romantic feelings for Elena begin almosdt immediately after he learns Katherine wasn't locked up, but actually just left town without a word.)
I don't remember Damon is that evil in the book, but seriously when he kill of his brother best friend(I felt so sad as she was waiting for her true love), that is it. Damon/Elena, I don't think so.
