Day 38: Lunch

Jan 14, 2009 10:50

Soubi was beginning to feel the effects of a busy morning on a tired body. To make things worse, they were serving Tacos and Burritos. He could really do some with something a bit softer today. Blander. But it was hardly his biggest concern right now ( Read more... )

Soubi's expression might have sent the girls from College away, but Sheena was somewhat immune to this face. After gathering her tray, a smug look on her face, she plopped herself down right next to Soubi.

"Heya," she said, bumping his shoulder with her own. "You wanted me? Here I am." It wasn't meant to be flirtatious, no matter how it sounded, but the ninja was in a good mood.

Soubi's expression didn't improve for her cheerfulness. In fact, it got a little worse. Even the chance to tease her for her choice of words was unwanted right now.

Raine had been more troublesome than he'd hoped.

"You seem cheerful. Who's life have you been trying to ruin today?"

The words from Soubi's mouth hit Sheena like a slap across the face. Stunned, she blinked her eyes a few times, her accomplished mood slipping away.

"Uh... no one's. I was just checking into a guy's intentions toward Raine since he was getting real close to her and I'm one of those kinda of friends that wants to make sure the guy's not going to hurt her," Sheena said, a little defensively. "I was happy to find out that he likes her, respects her and is very much interested in her. And I... kinda approve of him."

She poked at her food, looking at Soubi out of the corner of her eye. "What got up your butt?"

Soubi hadn't expected to actually be right about Sheena and other people's business, but there it was.

"There is nothing up my butt," he huffed. "Your Healer friend. Is she always so stubborn and..." Soubi's fists almost clenched as he looked for the right words. It was what teachers were. When they thought they were right about evrything and knew better than you, "...self righteous."

"Yes."

Sheena's reply was blunt and immediate. Raine was her friend and she trusted the half-elf more than anyone else here, but that didn't mean she didn't have her moments of wanting to choke the professor.

"She's a teacher as well as a healer, so when she thinks there's something you need to talk about, or something she can help with, she tends to push and push and push until you get so frustrated that you explode," Sheena said with a scowl. "She did that to me the other night. I kinda snapped, lost my temper and threatened to kill her if she ever repeated anything she'd heard."

The ninja stabbed her burrito viciously. "She means well, but she doesn't know when to leave things alone. Yeah, people do need to talk but that doesn't mean they need to talk to her about them, much less when she thinks they needs to. She doesn't understand that. I trust her more than anyone here, but there are some issues between us that will probably never get fully resolved ( ... )

Well. That explained a lot of things, didn't it? Soubi didn't like teachers.

And it seemed Soubi wasn't her only victim, but Sheena at least seemed fond of the woman. Soubi didn't know her and had no reason to like her.

"Speaking of people who never leave things alone, push and assume there are things to talk about..." he said, pinning her with his glare. "You persuaded her I need help. Now you need to stop her from trying. That way, I won't be needed to get any of my own payback." An all to sweet smile followed that didn't quite reach his eyes.

Of course, Soubi was contemplating conditions under which he'd allow Raine to heal him, but he needed to know he could trust Sheena before he dared bring it up.

"That's because yesterday you did need help," Sheena stated, meeting Soubi's eyes directly and not backing down.

"You're doing better today, if only a little. You start taking care of yourself properly so the physical wounds," she said, putting a finger to Soubi so it was very lightly touching the bottom edge of his bandages for a brief moment before pulling it back, "heal up enough that I don't have to worry about you getting a nasty infection and Raine won't have to heal you."

Sheena scowled again. "Yeah, I said something to her because I was worried about you - yeah, I know, odd concept for you. You know, if she did see you, she'd want to heal you anyways; it's just the way she is. She's a good woman - infuriating, but good. You keep taking your medicine and letting the wounds get properly cleaned by people who know exactly what they're doing, and I'll try to keep Raine at bay."

"I don't need anybody's help." Soubi tensed when Sheena reached out. He wanted to grab her hand forcefully, not just to move it away but to GRIP something, and...he wasn't sure why. Emotions, he supposed. He was never great at letting them out and there was nobody to help him reign them in. He was angry and he was hurt and, dammit, he didn't feel well. Usually these things didn't matter because there was someone who would make his world a lot worse if he let it get to him. But Ritska was kind. Sheena was kind. Kio was kind. Everybody was trying to be so damn kind and Soubi didn't know what to do. He didn't want to be able to feel this way.

"I don't want the wound to close," he admitted, looking away. "Why DO you care so much? What's in it for you? I suppose it's in a Healer's nature but...youThe worst part was, Soubi knew he'd be inclined to look out for Sheena too. And he had no idea why. He hardly knew her, though they'd talked about important things. And he had Kio back now. He could talk to Kio if he needed. So Sheena shouldn't ( ... )

Sheena blinked when Soubi admitted he wanted the wound to stay open.

"Are you crazy, Soubi? In some weird masochistic way, I can sorta understand wanting it to stay open, but if that happens, no matter how much cleaning you do to it, it will eventually get infected and an infection at your throat has a very good chance of killing you," Sheena said incredulously, her eyes wide. "At best, if that happens, you'll lose your voice and then how are you going to use your word magic?"

She set her fork down and turned more toward Soubi, putting her hand on his back. "Look. I explained this once to you, but I'll explain it again - you're my friend. It's normal to worry about friends when they're hurt. It's normal to want your friends to feel better, to be happy." She sighed. "There's no ulterior motive here, Soubi. I don't get anything out of it other than a friend that's not slowly bleeding himself to death, making himself weaker instead of sucking up what happened, moving past it and getting stronger ( ... )

Soubi was well aware that Sheena had a good point but it didn't change things. He didn't want these words carved into his skin. They were everything about himself that he despised because they were the reason he had no place to ever really fit and nobody he could ever keep as his own.

As a boy, he'd never had friends and grew up without seeing the point, blinded by the desire to make his teacher proud. Because, back then, he thought he had a place to call home and somebody who'd never let him go. He'd been such a foolish child, really.

Another thing. Sheena touched him an awful lot. Kio did too. Hm, the two had yet to meet but...Soubi hoped they'd get along. They were similar in many ways. It would be good for Kio to have others looking out for him. None of these strangers he went running off with. People Soubi trusted liked knew ( ... )

It was like Soubi actually meant the words this time. It was a good feeling to know, even if he wasn't completely sure about it. She gave him a small, gentle smile in return. The smile faded, though, and Sheena bit her bottom lip as she thought ( ... )

Soubi...liked that smile. He didn't often get to be the cause of such sweet little things like that. Kio's smiles ranged but were often rather dirty. Ritsuka's smiles....were so beautiful it hurt, but he hadn't seen one in a while ( ... )

Wow... Sheena really hadn't thought Soubi would tell her. She mulled the concept over in her head for a bit, taking in Soubi's crazy idea as well. When she spoke, she chose her words carefully.

"Well... If there's one thing I've learned with the whole worlds crisis back home is that nothing is coincidence and everything happens for a reason. There's a reason you weren't given a name. Whatever force it is in your world that creates Fighter pairs had to have known there would come a time when someone not originally bound to another would be needed," she said. "I think that makes you very important in the grand scheme of the whole Fighter pair thing."

Sheena bit her bottom lip as she selected her next response. "I... don't like the idea of you having the words cut out or destroyed. I don't blame you for wanting them gone since the doctor put them there, but..." She sighed. "I dunno, Soubi. It sounds really risky. What do you hope to accomplish with their removal? You just said a bit ago that you didn't want them healed."

"Helping me and my name crisis is hardly the same as the fate of worlds..." he pointed out, softly. He was probably being selfish worrying so much over this when people had bigger problems. But, the thing was, Soubi didn't give a damn about the world if he couldn't belong in it properly. Well, ok, he gave a damn about Ristuka's world ( ... )

"No, it's not the same, but I'm going off of my own experience, here, Soubi," Sheena pointed out.

"I don't care what your name or supposed place is in the world, you aren't replaceable. No one is replaceable," she added on with a scowl. "Remember what I said about you not liking yourself? I still mean it. You don't and now I sorta understand why. Did it ever occur to you that maybe Ritsuka doesn't order you around because he wants a partner and not just a servant? Partners talk about things and agree to do stuff for each other because they want to, not because the other one tells them to. It creates a stronger bond when both halves are willing."

The ninja sighed again. "I think you should serve Ritsuka because you want to, not because of a name that is or isn't carved into your body. What makes you think that by having someone without the special training that doctor had removing the words in your skin or marring them will have any effect like you say? It sounds to me like there's some kind of magic involved in what they ( ... )
