Night 37: Outside the Institute - North

Dec 18, 2008 12:46

[ From here]There was fog, and not much else immediately visible to Sanosuke. Of course, that was largely due to the fact that he didn't have his flashlight. He'd really have to try and remember to find out just how those tube things worked sometime during the day. Maybe Ninja Girl, or maybe Akihiko. Sanosuke really needed to introduce the guy ( Read more... )

Yahiko pushed off without hesitation, landing slightly closer to the wall and then straightening up to quick surveying the land around them. He couldn't see more than a few yards, but he knew that his eyes would fully adjust soon.

"Just head north, right?" he asked the other two. Since Sano had picked out this wall, north was probably straight ahead. He started off, but despite his haste he listened closely for the sound of anything approaching.

"What are we looking for?" Yahiko kept his voice relatively quiet and balanced the wooden pole over his shoulder as he walked, but despite the danger of the forest, he was still smiling. It was nice to be with both of them again.

"Hell if I know." The note had just said go over the wall, so over they went. Sanosuke hadn't ever been beyond that landing point, however, so the fighter had no way of knowing what was beyond. And it sure as hell wasn't like they could see it too easily with the damn fog. "Last time Kenshin and I came out here, there was this guy that got in the way. One of the brainwashed patients. Guy could just show up out of nowhere."

Thankfully, that hadn't happened this time. At least not yet. But Sanosuke had been in the hell long enough to not let down his guard, even if it was a lot like the three of them taking a walk at home. But thinking about it, it was pretty stupid to be careless there too.

From thugs to fucked-up monsters. All things considered, Sano would rather have the thugs.

Rangiku dropped down to the ground on the other side of the wall. She stumbled a little, but quickly regained her footing. After a quick survey of the surrounding area, she turned back to the wall, peering up at it and hoping that people would all be able to get over.

"How far should we go?" she asked Hinamori quietly.

Momo landed, dropping to one knee, beside Rangiku before gaining her feet and surveyed the area while the rest of their group started their climb over the wall.

"I'm not sure," Momo replied, quietly. "A part of me would like him to be put to rest far enough away that the walls couldn't be seen, but I'm not sure that's smart." She dropped her gaze to examine the terrain.

"We have a large group and we'll probably attract monsters the further away from the walls we get. Maybe ju--"

The vice captain's words cut off and her head snapped up, eyes wide. No...

Without a word, without a warning of any sort, Momo suddenly flash stepped, her reiatsu propelling her up and over the wall.

It couldn't be. No. NO! She'd felt it... she'd felt it...

"Yes," Rangiku agreed, peering into the darkness with her lips drawn into a tight line. Going too far they risked nightshift ending unexpectedly and being attacked on unfamiliar territory. "A few hundred feet then, will have to do." It felt utterly inadequate for their friend, but what else could they do?

At the same time Hinamori felt it, Rangiku did too. A gasp escaped her lips and she turned sharply back towards the Institute, eyes wide and shocked.

No... not again... not him... please...

"Taicho..."

She darted towards the wall, too late to stop Hinamori but enough to call after her. "Hinamori! Be careful!" They couldn't lose her, not with...

She swallowed thickly, squeezing her eyes shut tightly and leaning back aginst the wall. Hitsugaya... Oh no... His thread was gone, utterly gone and she had agreed to let him go alone.

It took a few minutes of harsh breathing and muffled sobs before Rangiku found herself able to make herself move again, the absence of such a familiar thread chilling her to the core.

She shouldn't have let him leave, shouldn't have let him go alone and now...

She climbed back over the wall, pausing on top of it for a moment to survey what was going on, before hopping back down. Work would soothe her, distract her, better than words had ever been able to.
