Night 37: Outside the Institute - North

[ From here]There was fog, and not much else immediately visible to Sanosuke. Of course, that was largely due to the fact that he didn't have his flashlight. He'd really have to try and remember to find out just how those tube things worked sometime during the day. Maybe Ninja Girl, or maybe Akihiko. Sanosuke really needed to introduce the guy ( Read more... )

Yahiko pushed off without hesitation, landing slightly closer to the wall and then straightening up to quick surveying the land around them. He couldn't see more than a few yards, but he knew that his eyes would fully adjust soon.

"Just head north, right?" he asked the other two. Since Sano had picked out this wall, north was probably straight ahead. He started off, but despite his haste he listened closely for the sound of anything approaching.

"What are we looking for?" Yahiko kept his voice relatively quiet and balanced the wooden pole over his shoulder as he walked, but despite the danger of the forest, he was still smiling. It was nice to be with both of them again.

"Hell if I know." The note had just said go over the wall, so over they went. Sanosuke hadn't ever been beyond that landing point, however, so the fighter had no way of knowing what was beyond. And it sure as hell wasn't like they could see it too easily with the damn fog. "Last time Kenshin and I came out here, there was this guy that got in the way. One of the brainwashed patients. Guy could just show up out of nowhere."

Thankfully, that hadn't happened this time. At least not yet. But Sanosuke had been in the hell long enough to not let down his guard, even if it was a lot like the three of them taking a walk at home. But thinking about it, it was pretty stupid to be careless there too.

From thugs to fucked-up monsters. All things considered, Sano would rather have the thugs.

Yahiko took the caution to heart, though he was already at his upward limit of alertness. Kenshin was right; the fog was impenetrable. The beam of their light stick seemed as solid as a sword. He ducked under the branch Kenshin held and kept moving into the creepy-as-hell mist.

"If we can't see, then they can't see either," he pointed out without turning around. The rule only worked for other humans, but then, Yahiko wasn't used to fighting anything else. The ground beneath his feet felt squishy and the cold was sharp, something that seemed to scrape against them as they continued. He willed himself not to shiver as he wished he had more clothing. "What's the furthest anyone's gotten?"

Kenshin was right about Sanosuke not being able to see his look, but the fighter still got what the guy was saying. The underbrush crackled as they went further into the woods, and though he was hoping to find something soon, Sanosuke was beginning to think Kenshin was right about just what they would report.

"That's not necessarily true, Yahiko." Things have been a hell of a lot easier if it was, but they couldn't even count on that for the humans there. "Besides, even if it were, we're making a ton of noise. If something wants to find us, a little fog isn't going to stop it."

Sano just had to hope that if it got the first shot in, it wasn't a fatal one.

When the kid (who Sanosuke still had enough years on to call a kid) asked about anyone else's progress, the fighter gave a shrug. "Don't know, to be honest. There's no maps or anything." And Sano didn't keep up with that posting board as often as he probably should. Kenshin might know, however.
