Nightshift 29: Experimental Treatments Laboratory

[ Entering from here.]The room had a strong sterile scent on the air as he entered into it, and Yuber’s expression grimaced in distaste as his gaze roamed over the area. There were cabinets lining the wall that appeared to be filled with bottles, dozens of odd utensils and metal tables and benches filling the room. It was rather interesting to see, ( Read more... )

His eyes lighting, Zelnick headed towards those bottle-filled cabinets, bypassing the antique-looking glass and metal equipment. "I wonder," he wondered aloud, "what do we have in here?" He scanned the labels-- and he grinned.

Without turning to Yuber, he asked, "Do you think a snoutfull of hydrochloric acid would stop a rat? Or an eyefull of ammonia?" He continued looking along the rows, delighting in the chemicals he saw-- especially the dangerous ones, and the ones that could become dangerous.

Yuber felt a slender brow rise up curiously as the little human darted off further into the room, and headed directly over towards the cabinets. The utensils on the bench area drew the knight’s attention as he moved over to see what useful items were available. Peering down at what appeared to be glass cups and round little dishes, Yuber feigned an interested sound while he continued to look for useful items.

The words Zelnick spoke meant nothing to the knight, and as he peered curiously down at the microwave, he wondered just what the object was as he murmured. “If I knew what the items you’re speaking about were then I could make an educated guess, but as it stands, those items are unknown to me.”

"Hmm..." Zelnick examined the lock on the door. It looked like it could be broken... and what do you know, he had a nice big blunt flashlight to hit it with. "Hydrochloric acid is the stuff in your stomach that dissolves food. It'll burn through pretty much anything, and it's toxic when mixed with... uh... well, it can be toxic with some other chemicals. Ammonia's an irritant, and toxic when mixed with oxidizing agents. And I do believe I saw some potassium nitrate in there-- saltpeter." His voice was quite enthusiastic; with a scientist parent, this was the sort of stuff he had learned growing up, and the prospect of having something explosive or burning was quite appealing. (Though he wasn't familiar with everything he saw...)

"This might be loud," he warned, and smashed the butt of the flashlight against the lock a few times before it gave way. Zelnick pulled the remains of the lock away and pushed into the room.

Yuber’s attention drifted away from the metal box before him and back over to Zelnick as they explained the concept. Human’s had such a dangerous substance within them? While he took on the human appearance he was anything but human. He wondered if Usopp would be interested in such substances while considering the uses they could be put to. If they managed to make some form of projectile weapon, then it could prove to be rather useful - that wasn’t to mention the potential use Zelnick could provide considering their knowledge on the substances.

Pulling away from the bench spaces, Yuber followed in behind Zelnick after they entered into the next room.

Heiji wasn't exactly sure where he was going, but he didn't mind moving through the room by himself. If anything, he was glad to get away--from both the fire and the dead-end situation he would have surely been caught up in. Holding flashlights and cleaning out cabinets for days and days? Thanks, but no thanks.

He needed a new strategy--new allies. People who would understand where he was coming from, instead of discounting his opinion because he was a 'puppy'. Ugh, the word still made him tremble in anger.

Now that he was out of sight of Homura, he dropped the calm facade he'd been keeping up. He gritted his teeth, muttering a few choice words under his breath. Who did that guy think he was!?

He spotted Hattori up ahead. "Oi, Hattori, wait up!" he called, jogging to catch up with the detective.

Heiji stopped and turned, realizing with some measure of surprise that Kaito was following him. His anger was gone now, replaced with embarrassed regret.

"Hey, you didn't have to follow me," he said, scratching the back of his head idly, "That Homura guy just really pushed my buttons, I guess. I didn't mean to cause a scene or anythin'. I just..." Heiji made an annoyed noise.

"I've got my pride as Detective of the West riding on this, y'know? I can't be taking orders to clean out cabinets--it's not enough." He ran a hand through his hair, agitated. "Man, I dunno... maybe I should'a just kept my mouth shut."

Kaito came to a stop next to the detective, shrugging.

"Are you kidding? You took the words right from my mouth back there. If you hadn't said it, I would've," he said, feeling his own anger cool as he spoke. He'd barely managed to keep his voice calm when he'd said his own "farewells"... If Heiji hadn't already yelled at Homura, he wasn't sure that he would have bothered keeping his emotions in check.

"That guy's an ass... Granted, I'm not much of a 'follower' to begin with, but that guy's really the last person I'd want to take orders from ever again."

He paused for a moment, and then added, "I get that the metal was for forging weapons, but you're a great detective, not some brainless minion that can't think for himself. You may be injured right now and in no shape to fight, but you're not stupid... and Homura was treating you like you were. If you're in the market for taking orders, you can do way better than him."

Kyon was glad to be far away from that smell. He didn't even properly process what it was he was even looking at. He just had to get the hell away.

As Aidou pulled and dragged him through to the next room, Kyon shook off that sudden ill feeling he was getting. Glancing up, he got an eyeful of the lab. Was this the place that his experimentation was planned? If so, what else was here?

Kyon started to walk around and look, but Aidou was kicking down a door. He sighed and followed after him. It was all he could do at the moment.

The first strike weakened the lock, the second one broke the door in. Even when he was nowhere near his normal level of physical strength, Aidou fairly powerful. By human standards, and those didn't count for much.

Even before he stepped inside with Kyon, he could smell it. Much like the putrid scent of the cat ready to pounce in the lab, this smell was one Aidou had come to associate with the nightmarish creations roaming around Landel's. Animal, and yet not. But this was somewhat... faint, though still fairly recent. Like the source had only just left.

He strode in.

Wonderful, there was a fight going on in here. This was going to make doing their experiment very difficult, if not impossible.

He didn't want to jump into the fight and get caught up in it. "Can you work around this, Birkin? Or is it too much for you to handle?" Playing on his ego would be the best way to get Birkin to do what was needed.

William narrowed his eyes, Wesker's words having the desired effect. "I can work just fine, Wesker," the doctor replied, for all appearances, casual. "Just make sure no one interrupts."

'Could he work around this', William had thought Wesker intelligent enough not to even have to ask such an idiotic question. The doctor roll his eyes and moved towards a nearby table in search of the necessary equipment.

"Just let me know when you're ready to draw my blood," Wesker said, turning towards the fight to make sure that no one and nothing disturbed William while he was performing the appropriate tests.

"Hopefully I'll have a viable amount of cells still in my blood."

William didn't bother to reply, once again falling back into his usual routine of completely immersing himself in his job as he searched for the necessary supplies. Though, William was just fine with this, if anything was to get done the doctor could not afford to have minor distractions vying for his attention.

Homura moved carefully into the room, the dark making it far too difficult to see. But his other senses helped fill in the gaps, and it wasn't hard to make out the sounds of scuffling, the growls of enraged animals and the cries of human pain. The puppies had gotten into a bit of trouble it seemed, and the demi-god had come at the right time.

The light of the flashlights would guide him to where they were. But he moved slowly, never forgetting that things in this place came seemingly from no where, the shadows more than adequate to hide lethal dangers.

Homura was wise to keep an eye out for danger, but moving slowly had been a bad idea. The spider had seen the two boys, but the cats had gotten to them first. Nasty cats, sneaky little furry beasts that ate her children in the daytime. Night was the only time she could get even with them, but night was also when she needed to hunt for food.

How lucky she was that a third emerged from the room she was too small to invade. The spider moved silently along the ceiling, watching as Homura crept toward the fight. She waited - she was good at waiting - until he was looking the other way and then she dropped from the ceiling like a hawk from the sky.

Her body was almost as big as he was, her legs stretching out, pincers reaching for his arms as a a leg sought to drag him to the ground as she hit the floor.

There was so little time to react, to even start to turn as the creature's massive body hit the ground. Homura could barely see in the dark, but he could hear, and certainly feel the limbs that tried to grab for him. His arms were easy enough to jerk away; the war god knew that if his sword was taken, the fight would become infinitely harder. But the spider's sweeping leg had more success, striking hard at Homura's open torso before he had a chance to block.

The demi-god refused to go down so easily, however, and even as he stumbled, Homura grabbed the leg with his free arm, using it to keep himself up. He did his best to regain his footing, but relied more on the sure hold as he brought his sword down at the leg he held, meaning to cut as deeply into it as he could manage.

The spider screeched when the blade cut into her leg, not sawing it in half, but fairly ruining it for later use. It was a good thing the arachnid had seven others. Plus, now she knew that Homura was armed and dangerous. The creature pushed forward suddenly, trying to ram her body into Homura's and bring him into range of her hungry mouth.

She was so starved for food up here where people rarely tread that she wanted to eat. Now.
