His last name wasn’t always Love. Danny Love was born to hippies. And his name wasn’t Danny. Sunrise Love was born to Moonriver and Isis Love. And he hated his name. When he was little, he begged his parents to change his name. He liked Danny. There was even a song with his name in it. So when they enrolled him in school, they registered him as Danny Love. But they still called him Sunrise or Sunny. He hated it.

When the kids at school found out his real name, as kids eventually do, they teased him relentlessly. Danny learned to block out the slurs, the harsh words of those who had been his friends. He learned to block his heart from the pain.

Danny grew up. Still hated his name. He changed it when he turned eighteen, trying to run from the past that haunted him, from his parents, from their free love and peace. Danny wasn’t a fan of peace. So when he joined the Marines, he went by Danny Coulter. He liked the name. It had been the last name of one of the few teachers who hadn’t snickered at his name in elementary school.

As a Marine, Danny went against everything his parents had tried to instill in him. He fought, killed people, performed special ops missions. He shot people, threw grenades. But he was fighting for them. For his parents. For the peace they wanted. Someone had to maintain it. And that was Danny’s job.

When did it change? When Danny was in Iraq, on another mission, one the American people were sure to never hear about, he was the look out. He positioned himself outside the building where his comrades were interrogating someone. He heard a noise behind him and wheeled around, pistol trained on a little girl. She was holding a small stuffed teddy bear.

She asked him if he had seen her daddy. He said no. She started to cry. ‘I can’t find my daddy. Please, mister, help me.’ Danny wanted to help her, but there was another sound behind him. He wheeled around and found a gun trained on him. But Danny was faster than his attacker and he shot him in the head. But the other man had fired. It missed Danny and hit the little girl. She lay there, in a pool of her own blood. Danny was frozen, but there was nothing he could do. She was dead and he needed to get out of there.

He retired from the Marines after that. Couldn’t take the thought of that little girl. She haunted him. He changed his name back to Love. He knew his parents were dead, but he wanted them to know he was wrong. He joined the FBI.

Working for Virgil Webster wasn’t exactly the easiest job. Often, Danny wondered why Webb had chosen him. Did he know about his past? Danny may have joked about all manner of crude things, but no one knew what he was really thinking. He was worried about them all. He watched Paul’s back, especially after his wife lost the baby. He looked out for Rebecca, knowing she was still fragile.

But he watched Mel the most. Mel was more than just his partner. She was beautiful and had quite a temper. But he loved her. Never planned on telling her that, though. The way her red hair reflected the sunlight drove him crazy, but he didn’t think that even she could understand his past. Danny needed to heal.
