The devil is misunderstood.
The name Lucifer means "light bearer"
It was originally the name of the star that would preceeded the sun; Venus's counterpart (Venus being the star that preceeds the moon).
So, one of the guys who was translating the Bible from Hebrew made a monumental error (or acted out of religious inspired hysteria) & cursed the poor morning star (as well as the name Lucifer) forever.
