I did a quick solar/stovetop dyepot today with the shrimp plant (thanks for the identification, Huette!). I pulled a bunch of the leaf/flower combinations, and put them in the pot on the stove with water. When it was almost boiling, I put it out on the back porch in full sun, and added some silk that had been mordanted. I can't remember if that ( Read more... )

I finally got all the yellow yarn I needed (knock on wood!) - so I've started the trim for the British Celt re-enactor from Red's list. He wants 77 inches of trim - so I'm hoping I warped up enough and made enough weft for it. It's going to be light yellow background with a central white stripe, with the madder red forming the pattern in the center ( Read more... )

Does anyone know if only Oak galls were used in Europe pre-1600? There are few different trees in our neighborhood forming galls, but they don't look like oak trees.

If any galls will work, then I'll go harvest some and get some strong tannin powder. I don't know if I want to mess with ink at the moment - but you never know.

Well, I've been trying to figure out what project to do for Kingdom A&S next year - better to start early, right? There's also 1 or 2 'body of work' events this fall that I would like to enter, and I don't want to just 'rehash' what I did last year.

I've now woven just about as much trim as the extant example - 22 cm, approximately. This is just about 2 complete repeats of the pattern. This means I -COULD- cut off the trim, finish the ends, and be done ( Read more... )
