Facebook is free because the users are the product. Those users are "sold" to advertisers. Most of the time I'm able to ignore the ads, other than sometimes being confused about why on earth I was shown the ad in question. So I almost didn't get to post my lake photo yesterday because I was banned from posting or commenting on Facebook from 10:08pm on Monday to 10:08pm on Tuesday.
