51 Washington, District of Columbia

Washington, D.C. isn't a state, so it doesn't really fit coherently into the order I've been using for this series. However, it's too important to ignore, so we're going to take it on as an epilogue. Fortunately, I've actually been there, or this would be awkward.

My first trip there on the epic 1989 road trip that knocked off North Carolina, among others. We rolled into town the day after Memorial Day. Let me tell you, as impressive as the Wall is normally, it's taken to another level when every square of pavement is covered with signs, flowers and other memorials left from the holiday. On the same trip we went to many and sundry monuments and museums, notably Lincoln, Jefferson, Air & Space, The National Archives, and from the outside the The Supreme Court, White House and the Capitol.

We also went to Arlington, as my father had promised someone he would take a picture of a family member's grave there. I saw Kennedy's grave and The Tomb of the Unknowns, plus the Marine Corps War Memorial.

In 2002 I went to a fraternity convention in D.C. I was only in the city briefly, but we did a monuments at night bus tour. Most of that covered ground already trod, but I did see two monuments that were new since 1989: Korea and FDR.

In 2011 I was very briefly near The Pentagon en route to Ray's Hell Burger.

There are many memorials and, more interestingly, museums that I would like to see in D.C., so I'm sure I'll be back at some point. I also need to get to a Nationals game, which may happen in 2012.
