Election time, a dragon, and a little more from the Sound Heritage project.

Yesterday was our general election - we went to vote, it was all very pleasant. Our two sitting MHKs were re-elected*, but much more interesting to me was that someone I have known for a long time (member of the bookshop committee) was elected in his constituency. I think he will be a good MHK.

*We have 12 constituencies on the island; the historic sheadings plus separate ones for the main towns. Each elects 2 MHKs so we get to put 2 crosses on our ballot papers and the top 2 get elected in each.

And apropos of nothing in particular I bring you a photo that D-d took at the end of August. The entire Nice Young Family went on a day trip to The Calf of Man. It was a lovely day, the sea was calm and they walked, watched birds and went rock pooling.

The dragon? The Burroo rock can only really be seen properly if you are in a boat off The Calf. It is usually referred to locally as The Drinking Dragon...

I have also been continuing the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage project - the recording I completed today was fascinating as it included quite a lot on the use of 'charms' to cure various illnesses - Mrs Dobson apparently made the most efficacious charms 'for the erysipelas, stopping blood, and the quincy’.

Oh - and the lady's father's ring worm was cured, after nothing the doctor tried worked, by 'soaking a bit of a rag in cows' water and wrapping it with that.' (The lady was talking in 1985 when she was 85 - the charms and bovine urine were in use in the first 25 years of the century, if not later.)
